Top 5 tips for finding the perfect architect
Deborah

architect and friend
1. Cast your net wide
You are looking for someone who’s going to be a lawyer come counsellor come friend all rolled into one, make sure you take the time to do that initial research. Ask for personal recommendations and check on the internet for who’s won awards in your area, and if you can visit their projects.

2. Find a building that you love
Try and track down the architect who designed your favourite building. If that doesn’t work then your next stop should be the Royal Institute of British Architects. Around 90% of architects are members of the RIBA and you can go to them so find out what architecture firms have a specialism to match the project you are undertaking.

3. Make friends
You might not be best friends with your bank manager, but you will need to be with your architect. Go and see buildings together and see if you like the same things. Also make sure that when you both say you like modern buildings, they’re actually the same thing.

4. Good communication is crucial
Use sketches and models to ensure that you can go back and check that what you actually want has been delivered.

5. Collaborate
Finally, remember that this is a team effort and that whilst you may need to compromise, it’s sometimes just as important to stand by your vision. It’s your house after all.
