With the average cost of moving topping £10K, like the Peterborough Grand Designers we often choose to improve rather than move. So how do you make sure you get it right when you do extend?
On this Grand Designs project in Peterborough it was a simple choice to follow the same style, but if you have an older or listed property it can be trickier. Fortunately for our Grand Designers, the cool, contemporary glass-filled extension is the perfect addition to their angular original house.
As with any self build project, the best route to a perfect extension is via a good architect. They can provide a vision, a uniqueness, and only an architect will be able to properly optimise available space, which is usually imperative when extending an existing property.
When extending an older property, the best approach is to be bold and striking, but to subtly ensure that the new addition harks back to the original structure. Using natural materials can soften the impact of a new extension, while building with glass can make the new addition seem almost transparent.
