For Jo and Paul it’s been a true journey of discovery. What they are delivering is incredible. And strangely, without fixtures or furniture, it’s almost easier to appreciate the brilliant architecture and engineering that will make Bill and Jean’s lives easier.
And perhaps living here will be sweeter still in the knowledge that the journey has been made by the whole family.
Bill may have to wait a couple of months yet but I think this place will deliver more than its original promise.
When people build their own house, so often, they embody in it their hopes, their dreams... their desires. For the past year I thought that this project was about something really much simpler – about answering Bill's needs. But I was wrong about that – because this brilliant piece of architecture and engineering has the potential of bringing so much more comfort and joy and delight to Bill and Jean's lives. And of giving Bill something else. A sense of release, from what’s previously been a very confined existence.
This place could bring him freedom. What a gift.
Almost finished, the Maidstone Hi Tech Bungalow uses technology pragmatically to actually lower its carbon emissions. An impressive achievement given that this house spares no modern luxuries.
