Kevin, Deborah and Naomi scrutinise the Peckham Grand Design, an exercise in the ingenious use of space. There's a video guide on space saving furniture and other guides about building on a small plot and optimising the amount of light that gets into your home. Trust the Trade Secrets team to put a little sunshine back into our lives.

The design of the Peckham house is ingenious. Limited to a single storey by the planners, extra space was squeezed in with mezzanine 'pods' with room for a bedroom coming just below the height restriction.
Every little bit of extra space is valuable. As well as the mezzanine areas, pigeon step staircases, a half-attic and half dormer windows help to make more space available.
Two especially large windows maximise the amount of light that can come in. The first is a huge sliding glass roof over the main, open plan living area. The second is in the third master bedroom - the only wall in the house that can accommodate windows at all.
