Some of the houses have thatched roofs, while all contain lots of stainless steel and acres of glass – mortgage lenders have been reluctant to fund such ‘avant garde’ houses because of worries about their future value. The area is aspirational, cutting edge, and a vision of what new towns could be. But it’s also deserted. In the current climate few people are willing to risk their own savings on such an experimental style of property.
Also, like the original town of Harlow in the 1950s, residents are governed by a strict code that forbids painting of doors, replacing of windows and a whole host of other regulations aimed at keeping the neighbourhood looking pristine and, some would argue, rather bland and soulless.
