Back in the 1950s people were moving to rent in Harlow because the Government told them it was a good idea. These days, with their own money at stake, potential buyers are going to need a better reason than that. With private ownership Harlow’s socialist Utopian feel might have been eroded, but on the edge of town there is a new private development trying to reinstill that same pioneering spirit of ‘Brave New World’ living.
Newhall, on the edge of Harlow, is an unapologetically contemporary neighbourhood that will eventually boast nearly 3,000 new homes. 60 years ago a bathroom and a downstairs loo were enough to tempt residents away from London, but today it’s the promise of owning your very own Grand Design.
