Jon bought this one bedroomed garden flat in Acton for £32,000 in 1985. At the time, he and his wife had a joint annual income of around £20,000. Although they were borrowing less than twice that, they still had to endure a "half-hour grilling" from the bank in order to get the mortgage. Four years later it sold for around £70,000. "We won't do better than that", he thought.
Now the flat is worth around £250,000.
