An example of the spiralling costs is evident on this hillside. These wooden chalets were probably built at the start of the war to house evacuees. Many have outside toilets. Six or seven years ago they were worth £60,000 and now they're worth around £200,000. And that doesn't even include the land they're on - all owners pay ground rent on top.
