9. The Roof Has To Be Completely Rebuilt (Image 9 of 17)
Alicia and Anthony are happy with the plans, so the work starts. But no sooner have they begun, than a big problem is found with the roof: the main frame of it is rotten. The reason it was so cold when George stayed was because there were big holes in it! It was originally built without any steels, so the floor was floating on the old wall plates. The top floor had literally been swaying in the wind and if this had been left, it would have eventually collapsed.
With the damage this bad, there was no choice but to rebuild the structure of the top floor… and even though there's a huge £120,000 budget, this sort of work doesn’t come cheap. Anthony and Alicia choose to spend an extra £5,000 to absorb those problems rather than compromise somewhere else in the build.
