15. A nasty surprise: dry rot in the kitchen (Image 15 of 23)
It’s all going to plan, but as the old kitchen units are removed, a nasty surprise is found lurking near some leaky pipe work: dry rot.
There are two main types of rot. Wet rot is when timbers naturally decay because they’ve got a little bit of moisture in them, but dry rot is a fungus. It can spread up to about four metres in a single year and it can absolutely wreck your house - but luckily for Ash and Carolyn, this dry rot has been caught early. To cut out and replace the rotten section of this home costs £200, but if left unchecked, dry rot repairs can run into thousands.
