Behind the dining room is the dark and dingy kitchen, where Lee keeps the neon lighting on, day and night, 365 days a year. The kitchen is dark and miserable for three key reasons: it faces north, so it gets very little natural light; the house is actually dug in to the slope of the hill, so there's only a tiny little strip window at this level; and a brick wall in front of the window stops any south light, which is the strongest light, coming in through the dining room back into the kitchen space. It’s completely miserable.
