Kirstie: About Kirstie Allsopp

Kirstie Allsopp's rich background includes a period spent in India teaching English. Upon returning to the UK she worked for Country Living and Food & Homes Magazines, gained a wealth of experience within the interior design field at Hindlip & Prentice Interiors and studied the History of Art at Christie's - all of which have helped give Kirstie an eye for detail when viewing properties.

Kirstie founded Kirmir Property Search, striving to find the perfect property for every client and making it as painless a process as possible. However, once her television career took off she left the company to write books, contribute to countless charities and to become a mum.

Kirstie presents Kirstie's Homemade Home, and also co-presents Location, Location, Location and Relocation, Relocation for Channel 4. She is also a regular contributor to magazines, television programmes and she continues to make her views on UK housing policy very, very clear!

  1. Hi Kirstie, I am just about to sign a contract on an old timber framed house in Essex with sticky backed plastic plastered over all the beams and doors. Obviously I want to keep it... and the 60's fireplaces!! ...NOT!! It would be a fantastic project for TV. What do you think? Christine

  5. Great programme, I love it and can't wait for it to start, thank you. My semi detached, two bed house has been on the market now since April 2009. With the first agent I had no viewing, so I changed Agents, with the second agent I have had about 6 viewings and feedback was they all loved it but it wasnt big enough. I then reduced the price to the price that the second agent said he could get, since then I have had no viewings and no interest and that was 6 weeks ago. Please can you give me your most valuable expert advice, should I change agents again? Should I reduce, although this will mean I will have to take out a loan to get the bungalow I would like. I really dont know what to do. I live in SY11 3QQ (near Oswestry, Shropshire) my property was for sale at ?122,000, then reduced to ?119,950 then to ?118.500. Since the reduction to ?118,500 no interest, I had more interest at ?119,950. It is a two bed semi, with large rear garden and driveway etc. Please can you help, should I reduce it more, change agents, chase up my agent, which I must admit I rarely do, or what should I do so I can move. This is a genuine request as I feel you are the only ones who can give me an honest opinion and help me. Thank you, Jue150 PS I did have one silly offer at ?99,000 which I turned down as I cannot afford to take that much of a drop and going on the current market and houses for sale around this area I feel I am asking a good price now, but I will take your valuable advice if you think otherwise. Thank you, Julie

  6. Hi Kirstie, Just a quick note to say how disappointed I was watching Location, Location last night. In the episode 20.10.09 you actively encouraged a potential buyer to bid on two houses simultaneously. If their first bid was accepted, then in the event that their sealed bid (to be submitted a week later) was accepted, they would then withdraw their interest from the first property. You rightly pointed out that this action was not illegal and that whilst the vendors might have a bad week, you had to think of yourselves. You didn't mention that the vendors may lose a property that they were buying and any other knock on effects in the chain. The biggest problem with buying and selling property in this country is the lack of a legally binding commitment on acceptance of an offer. This is probably the single most stressful element in the process and the uncertainty causes a great deal of stress for purchasers, vendors and agents! I have always considered yourself and Phil to give sound and sensible advice and you to often champion concerns and issues in the property market but in this instance to encourage this behavior on national television I thought was inappropriate. Yours sincerely, Richard Beville Estate Agent

  7. Hi I have a parcel of land in Kentisbeare devon which is surrounded by pleasant residential properties. Through a quirk of fate the PP I have is for B1 Industrial. At present there is over 400,000 sq ft of industrial space available in Mid Devon. The site is brownfield and although not needed for industrial use and seems to fall within Government Policy for residential re development it appears, from my Planning Expert, that because it is not in the envelope of the village it cannot be residentially developed. I believe that this shows severe weaknesses in Government Policy and is defeating the suggestion made by Government that Brownfield sites should be used. I believe that with its important implications that Government and the District Local Authority have questions to answer. I believe that this could make an interesting programme showing how there is a lack of relationship between what the Government directs and what is actually happening on the ground. I am prepared to make a planning application and go to appeal and believe that there would be much interes in the situation. If you would like to discuss matters please let me know. Best wishes Roger Richards

  8. Hi Kirstie, This is a big thank you for your programme promoting crafts. A year ago we set up a garden workshop in order to teach pottery and make our own range of porcelain domestic ware. After a modest beginning we suddenly started receiving lots of enquiries on our website. So many people have always wanted to learn to make a pot on the wheel and you have given them the idea and the confidence to go for it. We were really worried about starting a business as within a couple of months the credit crunch kicked in. However we now have full classes and a waiting list. You have really helped the cause of craftspeople. Thank you very much.

  10. I watched Kirstie's Homemade Home and loved it. Her passion for old fabrics stood out for me as I have a very old embroidered peice. My mother passed it to me and it is a very large table cloth or a dressing for a single bed. It is very fine white cottcharfon embroidered with pale blue dragons(?). Neither of my children would appreciate it and it is just sitting in a plastic bag. I was wondering if Kirstie may like it, no charge, just want it to be loved!

Like some of the people who have already asked this...please, please, please could you tell me where Kirstie got her lovely shirt dresses from that she was wearing in Kirstie's Homemade Home (and also lovely tights in opening credits)? I've been searching on websites ever since the programmes came out and have tried asking Kirstie on twitter but not had any luck. 17. Hi Kirsty. I am just about to complete a purchase of a former Victorian Gentlemans Residence. It has very large rooms and most of the original features. Can you tell me, when it comes to decorate a living room of which is 19ft x 16ft with all the usual skirtings, picture and dado rails and frieze is there a uniformed way of doing this? I intend to use a Victorian Green as the major colour, due to the fact the room has 3 very large sash windows that lets plenty of light in.

I really like the fabric she has hanging in her work room as curtains and would like to know the name of this fabric. Could someone give me a contact number for her or her shop. Many thanks. 28. Dear Kirstie, I love the new show, it's the hilight of my week. I long to be an interior designer and am in the process of searching for a distance study course (as i have a little girl at home.) Love your taste and I completely 'got' the feeling you described whilst looking through the linen section in the antique shop, i've kept my husband waiting around many a time while i get my 'fix'. I, along with some other viewers posting comments would love to know where you got the delicate, pintucked pink blouse....sorry if that's a bit presumptious! Many thanks for a great programme.x

  29. Here's a suggestion for anyone wanting to get plants for nothing. I don't know if it's the same all over the country, but my local council don't leave bulbs in from one year to the next. The same with perennials such as pelargoniums and primroses. They're dug up and composted. If you ask the gardeners while they're digging them up, they're happy to give them away. I got two sack fulls of tulips for free. The same goes if they're digging up shrubs. You've got nothing to loose by asking.

Kirstie, seeing as how you, in the last episode of 'Homemade Homes' stated that you have a certain penchant for material and other home accessories, I suggest the next time you travel to North Devon you detour via Wiveliscombe just south of Taunton, and visit 'The Courthouse' in the square, they do have a website http://www.courthouseinteriors.com/ I think you might be pleasantly surprised. 38. I had to laugh at Kirstie's description of her own sheep - they are Manx LOAGHTAN sheep, not Longhorn as she said in last night's programme. Loaghtan is the Manx word for 'soft brown' which accurately describes the colour of these marvellous animals: they are sheep for the connoisseur, wonderful to eat, great to wear - you can even make crooks out of their horns. Come on Kirstie, do them justice - they're worth it!

  43. Just wanted to say ignore all negativity from the daily Mail, your programme is probably the most accessible property programme on the box at the moment. We have been inundated with programmes in the past, where people have had vast budgets to have their own homes built, full of the most up to date technology!! I love your programme and it has inspired me to have the confidence to decorate my home, with what I like and not what is necessarily in fashion!! Keep up the good work!

  44. Loved the advice on sourcing decent vintage stuff this week. As an antique dealer's grand-daughter I do this with great relish (having recently purchased two partners' desks and a Victorian chair from a charity shop) I'm constantly on the recce. What I really love is your access to the plush interiors we never usually get to see- like Anoushka Hempel's own bathroom. Keep up the good work. And reassuring to know I've been doing it right for years.

  45. I am very pleased to see channel 4 catering to the renewed credit crunch spirit of 'make do and mend'. Apart from providing my boyfriend with a pin-up girl that I approve of, 'Kirsty's Homemade Home' is like pouring over a brand new homes magazine, but more unique, artistic, intelligent and individual. I am very into craft myself (making things that is, not the other kind..!) and am secretly smug that my curtain making, mural painting and stained glass work will now be appreciated by my smart set friends! Just one request Kirsty, where did you get the delicate oyster pink blouse you were wearing in last night's edition? Also, the black and white print dress with the scarlet slip and the fantastic tights that featured in the armchair sequence? (I am assuming you did not make them all yourself!) Someone definitely has a strong creative vision of how your wardrobe should embody the concepts of the show and the effect is%u2026deep wardrobe envy! I often like the outfits you wear on your other shows, but the vintage 50's feminine glam spirit seems to have been turned up a notch for this series and you look wonderful! So, would you be able to disclose your 1950's referencing style sources, or would that be another show altogether%u2026.?!

  48. I watched the first episode of your new show and found it both entertaining and pretty but didn't feel it showed the actual renovation of the house. I realise that you're trying to encourage the 'make it yourself/drag it out of a skip' philosophy of decorating which is, of course, highly commendable but looking at the end result of your kitchen (and, yes, I would very much like my kitchen to resemble if albeit on a far smaller scale) it did look like you'd spent rather a large amount of cash on it - beautiful wooden floors and the largest Aga I've ever seen in my life, neither of which come cheap. It's all very well telling the nation to make their own cushions and join the local nightschool to throw a few pots but it's a bit sneaky to then go and buy an eight door Aga and lay solid oak flooring and never mention the costs involved.

  49. Kirstie, your programme was absolutely fantastic! I completely agree with you about personalising your home, and have been moaning for years about the Argos generation that insist on filling their bland houses with faceless furnishings. I loved all the different things you made, and your kitchen is gorgeous - I can't wait to see what you do to the rest of the house. If only I had your job! Do you need a willing assistant for future series??!

  50. I watched your new programme, and was looking forward to how the transition from virtual wreck to pristine home was going to be achieved. A bit disappointing, I must say. At the start of the programme we see the house as purchased, and at the end it is magically transformed. What happened? I didn't see any of this change occurring - it just happened, and all we really saw was Kirstie blowing glass, making ceramics and cushions and buying stuff from a market. It would have been nice to see what was actually done to the house - did she rescue the old Aga, or was it just replaced with a new one? All a bit superficial for me, I'm afraid.

I found it, as well as yourself, inspiring and thought provoking. Having just had a year of hassle with a new kitchen refit (long story)at least now you have given me back the enthusiasm to try and dress it as I would like, for less or nothing using the "seek and you shall find" theory. You have fantastic taste but above all an infectious enthusiasm. I was feeling bit fed up as I am on a miniscule budget doing my home up but your show cheered me up and spurred me on. I have been making and sometime selling my own crafts and distressed bits and pieces for few years, I love flea markets and car boots and I am a regular at our local auction house. Yes I'm sure your aga cost a lot and the building work...( re negative comments given by someone else on ths page) but you are showing that by being individual and quirky you can make a house a home on any budget. I'm off to finish distressing an old set or drawers I bought at auction house for twenty pounds recently, you couldnt buy the quality new for that and it will be personal so good on you for keeping me motivated and Ive been doing furniture up and buying odd bits for years so good on me too!! I believe every home should have a lucky horse shoe, not a boring one painted black, but individual and I have made and sold many, distressed in contemporary design so let me know and I'll make you one, a house warming present from me!! ps hope you found your ring:O pps and well done channel 4 for another great home show.

  59. I have no idea what this previous comment is about...surely the whole point of this programme is that Kirstie is doing up her house using a lot of second hand furniture etc and saving money (as well as being environmentally aware). I would have thought this was exactly the type of thing we need in a recession? I thought the programme was absolutely wonderful and having a design & craft business myself I can say that this is definitely NOT 10 years too late - it is pitched exactly right. Well done Kirstie, another brilliant success!!

  60. Oh dear! What on earth is this new programme of yours tonight? Dreadful, or what? About ten years too late. Have you heard about the recession, credit crunch, that sort of thing? 'I have 6 beds, fifty-two chairs and seventeen tables to buy', chirps Kirsty before heading off for a bit of pot throwing. P L E A SE. Kirsty, have you actually watched this programme? Reminds me of when Fergie took flying lessons and we were all supposed to be thrilled. You are coming over as a spoilt kid in a sweet shop.

  61. Hi Kirsty - come and see us at our contemporary craft shows to get some new art/craft ideas for your homemade home. We do fabric sculpture both for indoor decor and the garden - very different and unusual! Craft in Focus; ICHF and Living Crafts are all fantastic fairs where high quality UK crafts are available from. We would all love to see you there and talk to you! Susan

  62. Kirstie. With the housing market as it is, and we have been trying to move for 22YEARS - we have been very unlucky -, I would have thought the obvious solution to kick start the market again would be reducing STAMP DUTY. Why is it still 3% for properties ?250,000 upwards, adding another ?10,000 to the price of the property? I want to see stamp duty 1% upto ?350,000 then maybe 2%? I think it increasingly unfair for people like myself who see our savings reducing rather than having saved for a 'rainy day' i.e. NOW? There seems to be more help for those with mortgages, loans and less to help those who really want to move and lower stamp duty seems the obvious answer to me. Can you help? Thank you. I live in Loughton Essex

  63. Kirstie I wondered if you can be of any assistance with some advise on local Builders in North Devon where we live. My husband is working for the army in Cyprus at the moment and we will be returning to our property in North Devon late July and would like a substantial amount of cosmetic work done to our house before we return so that we dont have to put up with the considerable amount of disruption there will enevitably be. We would like the kitchen, bathroom, en-suite refitted. UPVC fromt and back door. All ceilings, walls replastered and painted. All interanl doors, skirting boards, window sills etc repalced so that all we have all natural wood showing etc as well as new flooring throughout the house. Can you please recommend a builder that you may have used that can do this work for us of course he/she would have to be happy to work from a distance by phone, e-mail. I would be grateful if you could e-mail me asap as time is marching on. Thank very much for your help.

  66. Hiall, we've got a preview of Kirstie's new show, Kirstie's Homemade Home, the link below. It's very much a crafts-led affair, and you can find out more on this link - http://www.channel4.com/4homes/on-tv/kirstie-s-homemade-home/index.html No idea if or when it might be shown in Canada unfortunately, sorry Leslie!

  67. Sunday Telegraph Life supplement. So Kirstie now into sheds. Having her and her ilk screwing up the housing market and contributing to the downfall in the economy, sheds are the new off plan investment. Maybe buy a whole bunch of sheds rent them out and in a few years time screw up the shed market, get a proper job woman.

  69. LIke everyone else I really enjoyRelocation,Relocation and find the chemistry between Phil and Kirsty dynamic. They are both obviously very genuine and passionate about their work. There is one observation that I would like to extend to the production team. Please do not lose focus on the fact that we the audience essentially want to see the houses/ the interior design/ the accessories etc.,Too often with this new series the emphasis is too much on the presenters (much as i admire them!) and the camera scans around the rooms in a flash or merely displays still shots of the rest of the house!Just observe the next time- the ratio of home visuals Vs the banter between presenters! to prove my point. Otherwise I love the programme and just wish there were MORE of them.

  70. Dear Sir/ Madam. IDEA FOR NEW PROPERTY PROGRAMME. OLD & NEW Kirstie Allsop lives in the village of Broadhembury. The village is all cob and thatch and is one of those time warps with an abundance of unique buildings. cob and thatch making are still being practised. The Drewe Arms is being transformed (some linen fold carving) How did the village build and fund the magnificent church 750 years ago ?(No cranes or telescopic handlers or lorries to transport materials) Hembury Court contains some new green oak structures

  73. My husband and myself have watched Location Location Location since before we owned our own property. We used Kirsty and Phils advice of "stretching yourself", but together with other advice of researching up and coming areas, buying somewhere with potential and certainly buying within our means. We bought our first property with no deposit at all but in an up and coming area that was mentioned in the show. 3 years later we sold just before the house market began to slow for enough to pay for our wedding and give us a 5% deposit on our next property. Yes, we have pushed ourselves, but even in these difficult times we still didn't ever agree to anything beyond our means. Everyone should know their own limits and to blame someone else for "pushing" us to buy houses we couldn't afford is a cop out. If people like Kirsty and Phil didn't try to "talk up a dying market" how would it ever pick up? We need people to keep buying to get it back on track and those people that do buy now could be in for big rewards WHEN the property market picks back up, which it will. If we could afford another mortgage, we would buy another property now without a doubt because it is a good time to buy - only if you can afford it.

  74. Just had a day of Location Location marathon here on the Lifestyle program on FOX in Sydney Australia. Had it on all day while I sanded back and painted furniture. I love the show and its taught me well in what to look for in buying investment properties. Kirsty is absolutely right, now is the time to buy. Interest rates are coming down and property prices haven't hit rock bottom yet, so now is the right time to consider buying that first home or investment property. I am certainly talking to my adult children to consider buying their first home and get onto the property market before prices go up. So don't get out the knitting needles yet Kirsty just give us more location shows and keep us up to date on the property market...thank you and Phil for sharing your knowledge and providing great entertainment as well. My husband and I are now planning a holiday to England in 2099 thanks to you two ...so you count yourselves as travel experts as well....luv your show here in Australia. Debra

  75. I just saw Kirsty on the news advising us now is the time to buy!! Anyone giving that advice is either brain dead or has a vested interest in proping up the housing market. She does not appear to be lacking in intelligence so I guess like many others the TV companies wheel out she has some financial interest in talking a dying market up.

  77. To Whom it may concern, After watching Location, Location, Location broadcast on 17/11/08 and reading some of the comments posted below on this website I became aware of how much influence this show could have on potential buyers. My first concern is that for a program essentially offering advice on financial transactions, it seems to be hosted by similar characters that dole out property invesment advice in estate agents; ie unqualified. Secondly the program singularly fails to point out that buying a house with a mortgage is practically leverage as buyers can loose their deposits plus any monies owed to the bank in the event of reposession.Quotes to the effect of 'if you own the roof over your head the bank can go to hell' are utterly irresponsible as true ownership only takes place when the debt to the bank is paid off. Thirdly at no point does the show ever point out that the money you make at point of sale minus the cost of buying is not your profit. Take years of interest payments and maintenance costs and then compare your final figure to zero risk isa or government bond investment and the figures they would have to show the public would be much less appealing. This show is highly irresponsible, terribly researched and badly presented and does nothing but fuel the myth that to be happy and secure, general public in the U.K. must put themselves under huge stress and financial vunerability. This is program making at its most shamefull. Yours sincerely A Walsh Ps i hope to see this message posted with the others below

  80. why not have a tv show where you buy someones house that needs fixing up, And then you surprise someone who needs a helping hand with the offer of a home ,if they are willing to do the hard graft if they dont put in the work then it goes into a auction to help charities

Hi kirstie, i have to say you & Phil were right about scraping the HIP and the stamp duty for 1st time buyers and in some way it might be responsible for this economic problems we are experiencing because the housing market has been falling drastically before the credit crunch came about. I have to say ilove, love, love love your show and its inspire me on quite a lot about a lot of place and i also love the way you and phil bounce off each other. 90. I love your show so much - you both bounce off each other brilliantly. I live in Australia and know they are previous years that we watch but they bring back memories of my homelife in the UK. I have lived here for 37 years now and so it is wonderful seeing the different areas of the UK that I used to frequent with my family. It is amazing how much has changed in the way houses are built/sold/renovated compared to here in Australia. I am amazed at how wonderfully you connect with your clients and how you seem to have a knack for finding incredibly good places for them. Congratulations on the birth of your child and hopefully you will be having wonderful times as a family. Also, hopefully you will be back in another season of Location, Location, Location. I've got to say, despite living my early twenties with housebying in mind, I have realised two house moves later than sometimes it is a combination of housemoves and moving/buying at the correct time to benefit from the market. I recently put the Canada question to Phil - he said he'd love to film there but there were no current plans to do so. Watch this space... As for putting up with the clients, this is something I've asked Kirstie before. Her tactful reply was that as a professional, it's her job to guide and help her clients to do what they all have as a goal - to find the best property for them. Hope that helps!
