In Selling Houses, property expert Andrew Winter met owners of seemingly impossible-to-sell houses and gave them straight talking, hard hitting advice. Together with gardener Matt James, Andrew made simple changes to properties and their gardens which helped owners to find buyers, quickly.

Selling Houses was followed by Selling Houses Abroad, in which Andrew went on an international rescue mission across Europe, to help Brits who were having major problems selling their foreign properties.

  1. Hi We have been trying to sell an old farmhouse in Brittany for the last two years. The house is in an idyllic rural location and is functional but relatively unmodernised. It was used as a holiday home for several years but is now a bit lonely and needs a new owner. The local immobilliers are ok but stuck in a bit of a time warp and do not move at any other speed other than dead slow ahead. The house has a huge orchard to the rear which is perfect for further development and has two good lofts above which could be converted to double the size of the house. The location is about half an hour south of Rennes (the capital of Brittany) and about 45 minutes to the lovely coastal locations. We want to escape the rat race of London and move to my wife's home country of Malaysia to retire and need to sell the house to fund the move. Any help you can give would be most appreciated. Kind regards Michael and Rani

We have had only two serious offers both well short. The house has land of a quarter of an acre and open country side views to the front and rear. There are 5 other houses in the no through road. We have changed agents several times and are getting a bit fed up as we need to move on and look for schools and a new house. Can you please help???? asap.

  5. Hi Andrew I lost my husband 3 years ago in June and I was left with a large 5 bedroomed victorian terrace house and a large mortgage. The house has been on the market for two years and am now desperate to sell my property. It is in a nice location on the edge of yorkshire moors in a village called Baildon I am finding extremely hard to carry on financially and emotionally, I have tried to keep up with things and used some of your valuable information. If you do require any properties for your programme I would be very much appreciative of being considered as I would value any help and comments in order to sell this property. Regards Louise Marsden

  8. Hi Andrew, I am writing to you on behalf of my friend Tia who is in dire need to sell her house. If you are still looking for properties for your programme I beg you to consider my request. The property is a three bedroom terraced house in Blackburn, Lancashire which has been on the market for 16 months. With over 20 viewers & 2 offers which were later withdrawn she does not know what to do next. To make matters worse the relationship between Tia and her partner has ended however both are still under the same roof until the property is sold, as you can imagine this is extremely stressful for Tia as all she wishes to do is start a new life please please help her. Regards Victoria

  9. Hi Andrew, We have a very large house in the south of Sardinia. We have been trying to sell it for the last 3 years. We have a local estate agent and have had just 3 viewings in the last 18 months. We really need some good advice, do we spend more money on it, drop the price, increase advertising, split it into appartments..... Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

  10. Hi, If you are still making programmes for the show, I have an ideal house for a 'Selling Houses' makeover. It would need all your skills - 200 yrs old, great sea views, large and detached, it is nevertheless cosmetically tired inside and out. I can send photos etc if interested. (Location: Anglesey, North Wales).

  12. Yours is one of the best shows on TV and we have learnt a lot from it. However, we have had our bungalow for sale for 18 months with a number of viewers. Almost without exception, they have all said that they love the bungalow, and the garden, but could not live so close to the very busy main road. We have serious financial problems, and have 6 months to sell. Do you have any ideas?. We have contacted the highways to see if they would pay for a sound absorbing fence, but the answer is no. They have resurfaced part of the road, but left outside our garden it joins the old concrete one and this makes the noise worse. We record noise levels of 95 decibels from the garden

  13. Hi Guys, Love the show. Been watching and useing alot of your tips on a retirement home for my parents. We moved in three years ago. Campions a 1880 Georgian farm house in Nazeing coutryside in Essex with beautiful views. It is set on an acre with barn and out buildings. We bought it because of the bags of potential it has. I have been working religously to modernise and create a perfect home for a retired family aswell as I wanted to settle down. But due to my dads disability and medical help they have decided move back to london. I have had this house for sale and have had five viewings and an offer too but the buyer pulled out due to mortgage problems. Ive got two mortgages and cant seem to get the garden looking anything like how Matt has done so many times. HELP!!! If anyone can do this property the justice it needs you guys can. So we can get our lives back in order.

  14. My comments and concerns match those below. Our family needs to move on after being in the same property for 20years. I feel very frustrated with the housing market and am not sure that any amount of fresh paint and new carpets will change things at this present time. I do love the show though and get lots of ideas and inspiration from it. Perhaps as a tv show you could look at all those applying to you for help and match them up others who are also trying to sell!!!! We could do with the help to get things moving

  15. I love this show, but what about if, like me, you have done everything there is to do to your house, it has had editorials in the local newspaper and your estate agent has not had one person interested or sent anyone round? Unfortunately it is a 1960's box but with 4 double bedrooms and loads of space, lovely and contemporary decor, a small garden which we can't do anything about and is under the 250k stamp duty bracket. It has been 5 weeks now and it isn't the price either, but we feel frustrated. Do we change agents after the 8 week sole agent period? They tell us they are doing all they can but surely it is their job to get the viewings.

I have tried to help by passing on some of your tips, but i would hate her to think that I am "nagging" or judging her home. If you are making a new series, and would like to visit, Yeovil, somerset and feature her house, I know she would be very grateful. The house is really getting her down and she needs your help, many thanks, Anita

  17. we bought a house in the south west of France and engaged a British builder who we met when his wife worked at the estate agent, she has now left there, They unbeknown to us new what they were doing, i am being careful with my words, and did not complete the work that we paid them for,ie they said that the windows were ordered and needed to be paid for and as we thought we knew them foolishly trusted them, and paid the bill, and yes no windows,we have asked for our money back to no avail and even took them to court and were told that as our documentation was in English is was not legal do you know if this is correct i would be grateful for any constructive comment.

  18. I have a rural 3 bed cottage in Devon with a good sized garden and parking for two cars. The main attractions being a beautifully living room and 28 ft long kitchen diner. The cottage has loads of character and is just 15 mins from the sea. I have been trying to sell my house on and off for 4 yrs. My two children and I need more bedroom space and a less rural location. I have had 3 buyers all of whom pulled out at the last minute leaving me very demoralised. I desperately need to move on but am very nervous about entering the market again especially at this time of recession. Please can you help?

  19. Hi Andrew, I have tried twice to sell my 4 bedroom detatched house with a nice area of land in Worcester with no luck. I really need to be looking at a place with no stairs due to my health and desperatly want to get selling it to move into something smaller as my children have left home and a bungalow with no stairs due to my heart. It has lots of potential but the decor is a state and I do not have the energy and knowhow to do it all myself. How the house came about is an interesting story which would also make great veiwing. Your help would be really appreciated! Hope to hear from you soon! Many Thanks Vivianne

  20. What is the point of 'doing up' a house to sell it, spending on wallpaper/paint/furniture to your taste which still might not attract a buyer? Whatever happened to decorating and furnishing your new house yourself? We were advised to remove a run of wardrobes in our smallest bedroom; our answer? If the buyer doesn't want them, THEY can remove them!

  24. Hi Andrew and the Selling Houses team, I would welcome some advice > I have a 1930's 3 bed detached house in Sutton, Surrey. Its been on the market a short while and we dont seem to have problems getting viewings (and had 2 offers that were too low to accept) but Im considering the next steps... It does need work and estate agents advised us to leave it alone, put it on the market - they claim people are just looking for a bargain these days. However this does seem to go against my gut feeling that I should invest a little in the property "do it up" and acheive a reasonable price for it??? I'd be very interested to hear what you think ... Hope to hear back from you

Our lifestyle has changed since embarking on this adventure with the arrival of our son last year and a daughter arriving in February so we are wanting to return back to the UK. The house has been on the market for 6 months and we have had no viewings and feel that this is down to the agents over here being a bit in the dark ages!! Have you any advice on who to advertise with or do you fancy doing a programme over here!! Look forward to your reply Kind regards Louisa Boag

Most have spectacular views of the ocean while some certainly don't. 30. Hi Andrew, We have a nice house, granny annexe and large garden in west yorkshire which our next door neighbour (who is a property developer)has made it very difficult to us to peacefully enjoy. He has constantly harrassed us with perceived disputes relating to planning, boundaries, drainage rights etc etc. We have spent a small fortune trying to resolve any problems which may have existed, but he still goes on and on. He has abused our property by relocating boundaries, and destroying shared amenities. We believe that his intention has always been to totally wear us down so that we sell the property and no one but him will want to buy it, (but he has made no honest approach in this respect!) We got so depressed that we moved out in March 08. The property has been effectively abandoned. We need to sell but he makes it very difficult by his 'disputes'. Please can you help us in some way., you could really get your teeth into this. We have quite a story to tell which would make very interesting viewing. Thank you, Alison

  34. Hello Andrew! If you are making a new TV programme - we desperately need your help and advice! We are self-builders and we spent 2 and a half years building and completing our 'dream' home, we had never done anything like this before -it was exhausting and very stressful, especially as we both suffer from ill-health, but we love our new home and are very happy there. Three years ago we moved into our new home and put our existing 3 bedroomed bungalow in Chester-le-Street, Durham on the market for sale. Over the last three years we have had loads of viewings and have had offers for the bungalow, but none have gone through to exchange of contracts. We have tried everything we can think of to sell the bungalow, from: dropping the price; removing fitted wardrobes, complete redecoration in neutral colours; fitting new carpets, new laminate floors, updating the exterior, even re-doing the gardens, but our bungalow has still not sold! We do not know what else to do and are now desperate - we are both retired and the cost of keeping two homes going is crippling us -please consider us for your new series we are desperate and please please help us! Thank you very much!

  35. Like so many other properties our Victorian cottage has been on the market since February. We have had over 70 viewings and three offers (but all fell through as they could not get a mortgage). We have already dropped the price. We had five viewings over the weekend, they all loved the cottage (or so they say) but there is always an excuse (don't like the road, too far from the shops etc etc). We do not need to sell the house for financial reasons we just want to move nearer our family. Any suggestions??

  43. Hi - I was wondering if you were looking to hear from people who encounter problems buying properties abroad. We have a nightmare story of buying a property in Slovakia. We 'bought' an apartment in Bratislava. Only a day after we got the keys, a lady had knocked on the door saying it was her apartment. Not only we were victims to a fraudster, it also seems like the slovakian bank we got the mortgage from didn't check the ownership certificates and documents and released money into a dubious account, not mentioning the slovakian Land Registry which failed to act upon court orders. We've been in and out of courts for two years and with little effect. Slovakian court system is terrible and certainly fails the ordinary people. We have lost over 100.000 euro so far not counting the fact that we are stuck with a mortgage to pay and no property. Please let me know if you would be interested to know more. We are keen to publicise the story to stop others falling into a trap and to get things moving. Best regards, Joseph and James

  50. HI GEMMA. The show you watched was made a while ago so the property may not be available, but you can find a good selection on www.aplaceinthesun.com

  52. I have a wonderful first floor 2 bedroomed apartment in a period house dating back to 1769. The duke of Devonshire had the place for week-ends for the Quorn hunt. The view is amazing, stretching for mile across to the Charnwood forest. An acre of garden to sit in, complete with cellar space and garage. The Drawing still has all the period features and has a window sit to sit and just stare. All my windows face the back which is south facing.

  53. Hi, I watched your programme on sky the other evening, and a house was featured in france that needed a lot of work done to sell it and the price was very high. You compared it with another house to show the viewers of what they could get for the same money. I was hoping you could direct me to a site which had this house for sale so I could look at it more closly? Many Thanks Gemma Pickering
