Matt James, About Matt James

Matt James is a garden designer, horticulturist and university lecturer who rose to fame with Channel 4's The City Gardener and later helped Andrew Winter give hard-to-shift properties some kerb appeal in Selling Houses.

Matt's gardening career began as a teenager working on a small farm. He then went on to study at various horticultural colleges and work at nurseries. Matt was honoured in 2000 as Londoner of the Year in the field of Environment and Regeneration, in recognition of his work establishing a successful circuit of Farmers' Markets in the capital. Today his enthusiasm has led him to teaching and he lectures at a South London college.

Matt's greatest passion as a gardener is trees - he is a genuine, 21st-century tree hugger and has made it his mission in life to get as many cityfolk as possible planting trees again!

  1. Hi, i love to watch matt james- the city gardener, this is more of a question than a comment.I loved the plant 'pennisetum' that matt used in one of his programmes, so i went out and bought one with matt james collection name on it. I have it in a container on my patio which is south facing (England), it is now over 2 years old and as yet still hasn't produced any 'fluffy tails' can you tell me why this is please?

  2. Hi Matt, Greetings from Mauritius. I'd like to ask you what type of plastic should i use to stop the grass to grow as i'd like to put pebbles or gravels on top in my backyard. I live in a tropical island, so what if it rains? Does the water just stay on that plastic? Cheers. Priscille.

  5. Love you and your show so much here in Kamloops BC, Canada. We get up early every Saturday morning to watch. Your show wasn't on this morning and we can't find upcoming episodes posted. Very sad. Hope it's temporary.

  6. I have watched The City Gardener since it started and am looking for some inspiration with planting and privacy. Our garden was a hillside when we moved 3 years ago but we bought it because of the fantastic views over the house onto the moors. My husband (stonemason & all around creative hardworking person!) has created from a 'ski slope' totally unusable for 2 children - 4 terraces. The 1st two at the top are grassed and the 2nd two are a raised deck and one leading out from the kitchen diner. We've used sleepers as retainers and galvanized steel on the ballustrade. The trouble is it is just pretty boring with (sorry) conifers all around for privacy (the builders planted them years ago). Even more amazing is the fact that he did all this whilst I was going through surgery for cancer & treatment for another 9 months ALSO with a 5 month old and 2 1/2 year old!! I would love some help transforming what is already a great garden into a WOW fantastic area for dining and so the children can have a play area. We love Matt's style & enthusiasm. Cheers!

  7. Hei, thanks for the brilliant programme. We saw The City Gardener in Finland last spring. Matt got me so ever so inspired. I fell in love with grasses! I only have a big balcony up in north but now I have such beautiful grasses and plants there. The colour scheme is the same from indoors and its lovely to sit indoors and have the view from the open balcony door and windows. Kiitos Matt, you're brilliant.

  8. Greetings to Matt James (or to whomever reads this!), Do you ever come to Canada? I see that your show is filmed in England and the USA, but never Canada. Hmmm... how sad. If someone could please let me know how I can request Matt to visit my new pokey, townhouse garden... it would be much appreciated! Cheers, Joanne

  9. I am wondering if you will ever be doing a new series of The City Gardener. I have always enjoyed this programme and would love to be a part of any future series. I have lived in my mid terrace 1900 house for the last 10 years. When I first moved in I made an attempt to resurect the garden as it was an unloved, weed infested, mess. Over the last 6 years I have decorated a room a year so the house is nearly finished to my satisfaction, however, the garden is still not a space I like to use (even though I am an outdoors person and love nothing more than to sit out and read a book in the Summer holidays). I am about to become a first time mum and the space is mainly made up of uneven slabs and concrete. I would really appreciate Matt's help in making this another room that is both adult & child friendly...

  10. We live in a little terraced house in South Yorkshire. Our garden is presently the most boring, bland space (a small patio area and a medium sized lawn, no plants, trees or flowers) and we just dont know where to start with it. We need to make it a more safe and child friendly place so come next summer when our baby daughter can run around she has a safe place to play, but also a stylish and cool space where the adults can have a drink and chill in the evening. Help!!! It would be great if you could consider us for your show as we are loving your work!

  12. Hi. I love watching this programme and wondered how one can be considered for the programme. My lovely friend has an unmanageable garden and it would be great to treat her to a space she can enjoy for years to come. A new sanctuary in her own back garden. Thks Larsen

  13. Hi there My small back garden (20x25 ft) in Suffolk desperately needs a makeover. We inherited some lovely shrubs, a pond (since filled) and an overgrown laurel and fir tree that we would like to replace with something less invasive. Also, 40% is an unattractive gravel that might once have been a lawn. I would love some ideas on how to modernise it and give it a contemporary feel, without loosing site of its country location. I realise that the programme is called 'City Gardener' but would like to be considered for your programme, what do I need to do?

  16. Hi, I was wondering how you go about applying to be on your programme? Since being off work (I was on bed rest for 6 months of my pregnancy and am now on maternity leave with my beautiful 6 month old son) I have become a huge fan of yours and would love the opportunity to be considered for your programme. We live in a small cottage from 1800s with a tiny front graden (which we have done our best with) and sloping back L shaped yard, which is currently totally unusable, but with your help and creativity could be fantastic and enable us to have outside space for our baby to play in. I would be really grateful to find out how to be considered. Many thanks, Kate, Al and Theo

  17. Hi Matt, I really like the modern garden designs you do, in particular the decking style seats built into a wall. However I can't find how to do this anywhere online, can you suggest a good resource (book, website etc) please? Thank you

  18. hi matt, i live in london, just moved to a house we gutted & rejuvenated to our taste. but the garden got left, ran out of design flair.went for a boring large square lawn with a desparate looking border all round. but my keeness didn't stop me from completely flooding my patio with plants that i dont know what to do with.(mad for topiary).i completely love your take on garden asthetics & planting. so, would be thrilled to bits if my garden hero could caste his eye my way & possibly save me from gardening suicide. desperatly seeking sim

  19. Dear Matt i am a mother of 4 children and live in a semi rural area, we have been working very hard too get our garden straight but its very hard too get anything done. Our 5 year old suffers with dangerous alergies and chronic asthma. She has spent a lot of time on hospital and this both puts a lot of pressure on us all as a family, it also leaves us with little money or time too make a nice place for our children too play out doors. We would love too have someone help us out in finishing our garden so too make it a place that Katie and our other children can go too. We do not have a great deal of money as most of what you did have was spent and making our home an allergy free enviroment for katie. We have had too fence part of the garden off as it would take too long and too much money too get into a state that was useable and safe for our children. I don't normal ask someone like this but I would really be very happy if you could help us. If you will and would like any pictures please contact me on my email address. many thanks lisa

  20. Hi my name is Faye. I am in desoperate need of a Gardener to sort our "Secret Garden". We have been living in this new house for two years now and have not look after our garden from the start. Now that we decided to keep the house and decorate it we don't even know where to start!! The weeds have definitely won the battle. If there is any chance we could be considered for your show we would be very grateful and I will promise you will have a great interesting and funny episode for your show. sincerely Faye

  21. Matt please can you help us with our garden as we are almost desperate. Could we please be considered for one of your shows. We have a small garden and have removed four large fir trees at the bottom. We now have more space but we dont know how to design something really nice for the two of us to sit in and apreciate. We are South African and are used to South African plants and garden designs which are very different from here. We would really like some help. Please consider us. Thanks

  22. My partner and I live in a most beautiful part of the UK, on the edge of Exmoor in the Brendon Hills. Our home was once an Old Wagon House and is part of a small stone development. We moved here nearly a year ago now and whilst the front garden is fine, the back garden is on a very steep slope and contains slate we are having difficulties in knowing what to do. As amateur and novice gardeners we would appreciate your help and guidance as we do not know where to begin. We do not believe that a garden of this type has ever featured on a garden makeover programme and we would love to have a professional gardener to give us guidance. If you would like to see pictures please ask and we will e mail. It would certainly be a challenge but, we know it has potential but we do not know where to begin. Are their any Garden Makeover Shows looking for interesting gardens and terrain please e mail Thank you
