Debbie and Darren Ward from Lincoln have spent two years living in Cyprus, where Darren was serving Queen and country as an RAF engineer. But now he’s been posted back and they’ve found themselves thrust headlong into the credit crunch.

With Debbie’s daughter Lauren and one year old Charlie in the family, they’ve quickly found their two-bed house isn’t up to the job. And that means Charlie is sharing with mum and dad. But the problem is, they don’t want to be sellers in this market, so they’ve decided to rent out their current home. That leaves them with the terrifying prospect of taking on another mortgage, just as the country faces a recession.

But just because they need to move, it doesn’t mean they’ll settle for anything. Debbie and Darren would like a house with at least three bedrooms and a large garden. Being near good schools is a must for the kids and Darren would like a bit of extra space for a workshop or study.

In this climate, they want to keep their monthly bills low- so they’ve wisely capped the budget at a hundred and eighty thousand.
