Our first couple this week are Mel, a recently qualified naturopath who's setting up a new clinic, and management consultant John, who've lived in a wide variety of houses all over the world.
Nine months ago, they moved to the Gloucestershire countryside and started renting a converted barn. But this move isn't just about them. Mel and John are starting the process of adding to their family by adopting a child from Russia.
We know they want country life in the Cotswolds, but what exactly do they want to live in? Well, for up to £500,000 the house must have three or four bedrooms, with two bathrooms. It has to have a large kitchen and entertaining area - and room to grow with their new family.

After seeing two houses, Mel liked one and John liked the other - but it was the third house, the Cheltenham cottage, that blew them both away. It's just below their budget at £495,000. It's large, open plan, filled with character and ready for a family.
The only problem is the adjoining barn and garage, owned by the same people who own the house. They're asking £62,000 for it, as a separate transaction. If it's not bought with the house, the people next door will buy it, which could be awkward. But Mel and John wouldn't be able to afford it for a while.
Mel and John make an offer of £475,000 on the house and express their interest in the garage, asking if they can have a month to try and get money together for it. The offer is rejected, but the vendor comes back with £485,000, a generous 10 grand off the original asking price, and offers them six months' exclusivity on the barn.
They up their offer to £480,000 but to everyone's surprise, the vendor holds out for £485,000. Mel and John decide pull out. For now they conclude that the adoption process will be their priority, and that finding a property will have to go on the back burner.
