This week we’re house hunting for two couples with children, meaning schools and space are top priorities.
Two years ago, Shane and Annamarie started renting in Buckinghamshire with their two boys, Charlie and William. With an easy commute to his work in London and the appeal of great schools for their boys, they’re enjoying the quality of country life that Buckinghamshire is giving them and have decided to stay put.
They’ve seen over 50 properties without success, and even though they're yet to find their dream home, at least they now know what they're willing to compromise on.
With a whopping £850,000 to spend, there's no shortage of properties in Shane and Annamarie's price bracket. The problem is that they're looking for a top-end home, and everything has to be perfect. The garden needs to be huge so that their sons can spend as much time outside as possible, and they also want at least four bedrooms, ideally with two en suite bathrooms. They're open-minded about taking on a project, and business-minded Shane is definitely looking to add value.
After being put off by a modern detached house with a sloping garden, Phil changes tack and shows this couple an older house with an enormous 300 ft garden. The house isn't huge, but dollar signs appear in Shane's eyes as he mulls over the opportunity to extend and add value. The amount of work required worries Annamarie, so once again Phil goes to the other end of the spectrum and shows them something over budget, but finished to an impeccable standard. Before long it becomes clear that this is the house for Annamarie. Fortunately for her, Shane also likes it and they're sold.
After much bargaining, they secure the house for bang on their £850,000 budget. They've only been living there a few weeks and canny Shane is already looking at ways to maximise his investment with a garage conversion. Further down the line, he's also planning to extend upwards with a loft conversion. A fine compromise!
