Kirstie Allsopp is transforming her dilapidated country cottage in Devon into a beautiful homemade home. She's rampaging through reclamation yards in search of beautiful bargain furniture to restore, hunting for the best handmade craft and design in Britain, and learning how to create unique and exclusive pieces of her own.

Kirstie tries her hand at blacksmithing

Blacksmithing. From Kirstie's Homemade Home

In this week's episode, Kirstie takes on two rooms: a grown-up living room and a playroom for the children.

For inspiration, she noses around the opulent Port Eliot, a Grade I listed stately home where plastic ducks sit cheek by jowl with priceless Van Dykes, and Soane murals cover entire walls. Plus colour guru and knitwear designer Kaffe Fassett teaches Kirstie how to be a slob with colour.

Kirstie is passionate about great British craftspeople, and this week three talented artisans let her have a go at making bespoke items that could last her a lifetime. She gets familiar with a furnace when she makes her own poker, learns to make her own lampshades, and gets to grips with knitting.

Always a sucker for a bargain, Kirstie goes shopping at a reclamation yard in search of hidden gems at knock-down prices.

  1. Dear Kirstie I have so thoroughly enjoyed viewing your shopping and craft making excursions all of which have contributed to the making of a beautifully snug and comfortable home so much of which is an extension via the medium of crafts, of your very own personality ! I think you can see that I am not enarmoured of starkly 'modern' buldings in which we human animals, by our very nature, are unsuited unless - we can transform into artificial beings befitting our neewly contrived environment. Whew ! I think I have lost my trend of thought ! With warm good wishes Sally Stewart

  2. Hi, I watched the show when Kirstie made the fire poker at the blacksmiths, my father made a fire poker at school but last year it got broken, I went to my local Blacksmiths in East Sussex and they told me they would not let my father make or even watch it being made for health and saftey? Do you know any blacksmiths in Sussex that would do this?

  8. Could you please publish the name of the manor house Kirstie went to where she showed the massive living room covered in the mural, or just tell the name of the sculptor who made the wooden book sculptures on the mantel piece? Also please mention the name of the person whose flat Kirstie went to when she was talking about how it was lit and the different types of lampshades.

  15. Loved the show. I think it is so important to support British crafts & trades people. I noticed that Kirstie had some fab pictures on the walls and I particularly liked the one with draped flags. I would love something similar can you give me any idea as to were I might get one? Thanks Jenny

  17. Have you got any details regarding the basket weaving Kirsty did on one of her shows. I live in Hampshire and did visit the Sustainability Centre in Petersfield a few weeks ago while there was a course on basket weaving, but I didn't get any further details of future course. Looked on their website, but nothing else seems to be coming up.

  29. Episode three and the work of Kaffe Fassett, has inspired me to pick up my needles and knit with my daughter. I simply loved one of the blankets shown in the programme held by Kirsty (shades of red, pink and magenta squares with shades of blue piping/trim). I've just gone through the 24 photos of Kaffes' work on your website and not one of them displayed the item I was most interested in. Is it possible for you to add another screen shot from the show of the blanket so I can share it with my daughter or even email me some screenshots directly? any help would be much appreciated many thanks Justine.

  44. If I'd been given the brief to devise a programme combining my love of house restoration with creative crafts, I couldn't have come up with anything more delightful than Kirstie's Homemade Home. As a quilter, I've dabbled in all sorts of crafts in the past and how wonderful to finally have a programme which celebrates craftsmanship and creativity. This evening's episode, number 3, was a feast for the eyes. For a crafter, the sight of hanks of wool and bails of fabric sets the fingers twitching and as for Kaffe Fasset's coloured creations - they made your eyes pop. So what if I couldn't actually live in some of the rooms visited, the shear exuberance of colours and textures just made me want to grab a stash of swatches and stitch something. Thank you so much for such a joyous and inspirational programme. It's one of those (quite rare) broadcasts you just don't want to end. If I'm viewing alone, I even sit through it twice thanks to the hour later repeat. Roll on next Thursday evening - a treat to look forward to.
