Bedroom At Meadow Gate, From Kirstie's Homemade Home

This week Kirstie turns her attention to Meadow Gate's bedrooms

Kirstie Allsopp is transforming her dilapidated country cottage in Devon into a beautiful homemade home. She's rampaging through reclamation yards in search of beautiful bargain furniture to restore; hunting for the best handmade craft and design in Britain; and learning how to create unique and exclusive pieces of her own.

This week it's the turn of the five bedrooms. For inspiration, Kirstie heads to the Cotswolds to visit fabric and wallpaper designer Vanessa Arbuthnott's home; a flat in Hove, East Sussex, which the owners refurbished using recycled and restored furniture; and the opulent bedrooms of the Maunsel House, where she reveals how even the grandest houses aren't too proud to shop secondhand.

Kirstie is passionate about our tradition of great British craftspeople, and this week she gets back to basics with three highly skilled craftspeople as she unravels the mystery of spinning sheep's wool into yarn. She also gets to breathe new life into a chair that's nearly 200 years old when she learns to reupholster. Finally, Kirstie indulges her passion for textiles as she's taught how to design her very own patchwork quilt.

  5. I have been a 'hoarder' for years, since I was 10. I loved this programme as it showed what I have known for over 19 years, old and tired can be beautiful. Not everything has to come from Argos! Just wish I could afford a house to put it in. Is a book of the programmes planned???? Hope so.

  9. Hi Kirsty I absolutely adored this show, it has even made the 'keep' list on my Sky . It has completely inspired me to start doing arts and crafts again. My mother has just taught me to knit again and I am about to start on a patchwork blanket, using some vintage fabric I've bought, using my grandmother's sewing machine. I also made my first purchase of a beautiful piece of furniture from a house clearance/2nd hand shop, which I love to pieces. I really hope that you can do anothr show just like it. Many thanks, Tracey

  14. Thank you Kirsty and the BBC for a great show, really inspiring. I enjoy sewing and crosstitch have a go at most crafts, its wonderful to see this hands on approach and the new skills Kirsty has learnt has given me a push to try a few more myself. I've started collecting old containers for candle making already. Kindest Regards Claire

  15. Dear Kirstie You have a fan in my 10 year old grandson George. We saw your bedroom show - he was inspired. I had some patchwork squares so we got started, a first effort for both of us. He did everything, the planning, pinning, machine sewing, and decorative sewing. I insisted that I did the pressing. I would send you pictures of the result but do not know how. He has more projects planned. He is already very good at knitting his cat has several scarves and now a wonderful patchwork quilt. Who knows you may have started a career in design. regards Jane

  16. I just love this series. Thank you so much. As an amateur needlewoman myself I do apreciate all contributions to these programmes. I should love to take part in the next or subsequent series. I shoud love to make a purchase in South Nottinghamshire or South Derbyshire if you are considering more candidates

  17. Love the programme and the emphasis on making and loving your home into life. I just wonder if there could be more on storage - the huge problem in most people's homes. I loved the dresser in the kitchen but there doesn't seem to have been much emphasis on where to keep things in the other rooms, particularly the bedrooms. Did we even see a wardrobe or chest of drawers? It would be fantastic to have tips on beautiful and economic spaces to tidy life's bits and pieces away in. Maybe in the second series?

  18. Your show has been of great inspiration to me. I wondered why I was so reluctant to spend good money on furniture and things for my home when I could find them in any house in my village. ( ikea sindrome!) I've always wanted something original and quality, but have been unable to afford the hefty price tags for the styles I like. Thank the lord for your advice and tips, after watching the show last night my creative ideas are flowing and I'm looking forward into turning my humble and plain house into a comfortable, welcoming and unic family home

  20. I love this show. Roll on DVDs and books. Hopefully there will be more than one series? xxx Just a comment on Cath Kidston though. Cath Kidston was wonderful and known for her quirky take on vintage chic....until she became mainstream. It was great to see her designs on the tv BUT many people I have spoken to fear that the more commercial her brand becomes, the more it will loose its most attractive feature. I hope this doesnt happen.

  22. Hi kirsty, just to let you know I am loving your show. I find it quite amazing how we have the same taste as I to love to rummage around antique shops and reclamation yards. We have been renovating a very old character house for the last 2 years and it is a mixture of antique furniture which has been renovated and looks stuning in this period property. At the end of your last show (bedrooms) it was mentioned about application to appear in the next series which would make my project complete. Although the house is in the welsh valleys I would love some of you ideas to complete a few areas of the house just to give it that finished look and maybe exchange some of my ideas for your forthcoming programme. lynda brogan

  23. I am loving this show. Kirsty is great to watch and the crafts people she meets are so interesting. There is just one thing - Kirsty - you complain about having seen too many magnolia houses and say that you want to do something different, and every house you visit for inspiration has richly coloured walls, yet you still painted all your own rooms magnolia and spoilt the impact of the colourful things you put in them. Have courage - when you paint your walls a rich good colour it knits all the items in the room together.

  24. Thanks for the wonderful show. I've just had a look on the website and noticed that you do a step by step guide to some of the things you've shown so far. Could you have a little step by step guide on how to upholster a chair like the one in last nights programme? I've bought a chaise longue and 2 chairs from an auction. I'll have to take them right down to the frame as there's springs and stuffing pinging out all over. Unfortunately there are no courses running near me for upholstery so I thought I'd just jump in and have a go. I've bought some material but am not sure what to do next! Help! Thanks.

  25. I have just watched your bedrooms episode and am amazingly inspired. I am a Textiles Teacher and really want my students to see it as they have their GCSE exams in a few weeks and it covers a few things they need to know. I have so many ideas and no time to do it. I'm getting married in August 2011, I would love it if Kirsty did a "Kirsty's Home-made Weddings" series as they are so blimming expensive and cutting costs though creativity at my wedding is going to be a high priority. Love the show, thank you for your time, Charlii xxx
