Kevin McCloud in front of the Roman Colosseum

Kevin McCloud continues his journey across Europe exploring the lasting legacy of the Grand Tour on Britain. In this episode, Kevin follows in the footsteps of Robert Adam, the most influential neoclassical architect of the 18th century.

The journey starts in Rome where Kevin focuses on the buildings of ancient Rome, including the Forum, Hadrian's Villa and the Colosseum. Here, amidst the ruins, grand tourists would study by day, and then at night have sex with the multitude of prostitutes who were actually licensed by the Pope.

Kevin continues on to Naples, where in the manner of grand tourists he climbs to the top of Vesuvius, before exploring the city's most famous legacy: the archaeological sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum.

Check out the history of Italian architecture, from ancient Rome to the 21st century...

  1. Kevin said that Robert Adam, was the most influential of English neoclassical architecture. Well he was Scottish and born in Kirckaldy, his father William lived at Blairadam House near Kelty, Fife.

  6. After the wonderful episode 2, what a shock and disappointment episode 3 was. I thought we were being shown how the architectural styles encountered on the grand tour influenced the architects of GB. Instead, the programme concentrated on people's peccadillos and perversions. I am not sure now whether I shall watch episode 4 but, if I do, I hope it's more to the real point than this.
