Many in Castleford believe central to the town’s regeneration, and still missing, is a ‘forum’ building to house a new heritage centre, library and community space. Visit the existing antiquated library and you can see why.
You get a glimpse of the town’s vibrant industrial past from the oversized black and white photos above the shelves of books and upstairs, there is one ‘museum’ room doing its best to celebrate the town’s Roman roots but that’s all. ‘We want to reclaim our heritage and culture,’ says Alison Drake, driving force behind the plans for the new ‘Castleford Forum’. ‘Some of our Roman artefacts are unique; we have superb pieces of pottery and glass. We’ve got a superb youth orchestra and male voice choir and artists groups all over the place. The forum should have been a priority.’

Unsurprisingly, Castleford Forum is on its way. To be built on the site of the old library and Market Hall, it’s due for completion in 2010. Castleford folk, it seems, are on a roll. Or as community champion Rheta Davison puts it: ‘People are working for Castleford now.’
