Ah yes, the name! We’re all proud of a bit of local colour. So when the residents of Castleford discovered that, as part of the regeneration scheme, there were plans to clean up the name of the underpass, they were up in arms. Long called the Tickle Cock Bridge by the residents of Cas, the council planners, it seems, were keen for it to be known by an alternative and more wholesome name - Tittle Cott Bridge! ‘I’m a Cas girl and I’ve always known it as Tickle Cock bridge. I think the locals will always call it that,’ says Angie.

Anecdotal evidence collated by local historian Brian Lewis suggested the name Tickle Cock dates back to Victorian times because the underpass was a popular meeting place for courting couples.

The designers, of course, loved the history. ‘Having heard all the wonderful stories about what went on there we wanted to choose materials that had an intimacy and echoes of its past,’ says Deborah Saunt. In collaboration with artist Martin Richman, the result is a very tactile red flock lining to the underpass walls which acts as a daily reminder of its colourful history. The council are still calling it Tittle Cott. Only time will tell who has won this battle (although smart money’s on the locals!)

  2. They say that if you have a monkey hitting keys at random on a typewriter keyboard for an infinite amount of time will almost surely type a given text, such as the complete works of William Shakespeare. On this basis, how can we get over 100 regeneration professionals together given them four years and they end up with ???

  3. I was personally involved in the construction of the new underpass at Castleford and the comment in the article that states 'Firstly the underpass itself had to be replaced by a much wider, taller tunnel by construction engineers Jane Wernick Associates'is incorrect. The underpass was constructed under a 'Design & Build' agreement by contractor Galliford Try, who were employed by the Carlton Lanes Shopping Centre operators Edinburgh House Estates. Galliford Try employed the services of Corus Engineering Consultancy to design the structure and advise on the installation methodology, i.e. constructing off-line and sliding into position during the Christmas Day / Boxing Day closure of the railway.
