Employment in the town is now concentrated in the manufacture of chemicals (Hickson & Welch), power (Ferrybridge), electrical goods (Pioneer) and clothing (Burberry). Many new jobs have been created in distribution (Next, Asda), retailing (Designer Freeport) and leisure (the ski slope at Xscape) close to the M62.
New jobs in service industries have gone some way to improving the town's economy but it still suffers from the effects of the closure of the mines and other redundancies. Parts of the town have unusually high levels of youth unemployment, poor health and low educational achievement.
