Every Englishman's home is his castle but for Francis Shaw this is quite literally true. He and his wife, Karen, and their two young daughters, bought the ruins of a 14th century castle in Yorkshire and took on the remarkable challenge of restoring an ancient building.

Surrounded by rolling green fields, the location is idyllic; however, the castle itself was little more than four crumbling walls.

The attic. Yorkshire: The 14th Century Castle

Francis has had a passion for castles ever since he was a young boy. It's this passion that led him to train as an architect, although now he's more used to putting up commercial buildings than rescuing wrecks. But after years of only dreaming about it, he finally got the chance to live in one.

To help them accomplish this almost Herculean task, Francis enlisted the help of six stonemasons who lived and worked permanently on site during the project. They painstakingly pieced the castle back together using, wherever possible, the original stone. When that ran out they had to source and cut the rest from local quarries matching it carefully to the original.

As well as repairing any breaches in the exterior walls, they also had to rebuild the whole interior with new walls and floors and new battlements around the top. Unusually, one of the rooms on the 2nd floor was a chapel so Francis and Karen planned to install new stained glass windows in memory of its history.

Francis and Karen joke about finding the perfect suit of armour to grace their baronial hallway but the style inside is more neo-Georgian than mock Tudor. Karen was an interior designer before she took time out to bring up the children and chose to paint the walls in Georgian colours. Finishes are simple and natural and where possible the stone has been left uncovered to expose the true character of the castle.

Using his architectural skills, Francis has laid out the interior to create a large, open plan kitchen, formal sitting room and living space, as well as seven bedrooms all with en-suite bathrooms. Medieval castles have a reputation for being dark and draughty but this one is light and spacious due to the late addition of some Georgian windows on two sides.

Working onsite. Yorkshire, The 14th Century House

It's incredibly rare for a property like this to be available, especially with such a lack of restrictions put on its restoration. Francis and Karen have got there hands on a fantastic structure that has weathered five centuries and, with their help, will be there for many years to come.

Despite trees growing inside the castle walls and the lack of a roof, the couple were confident they could rebuild the ruin with a budget of £400,000 financed by the sale of their previous home and a mortgage. However with the project taking much longer than planned and the couple encountering several setbacks the budget inevitably crept up to around £750,000.

  1. I watch Grand Designs on BBC Lifestyle in Singapore, and the programme on the castle is my absolute favourite. It was a real labour of love on Francis's part!

  6. I love Grand Designs, but this is my favourite episode by far and I have watched it many times. The story of the restoration is inspirational, and the result breathtakingly beautiful. The Shaw's have earned the right to live in their 'fantasy' castle for the rest of their lives, and I hope they do.

  12. Congratulations to Francis and his wife on their work on this magnificent house. My husband and I love Grand Designs, although we don't always love the finished houses. However, this one is stunning, and it must have given the family such satisfaction to have brought the runied castle back to life.We are planning a short holiday later in the year andwould love to stay at the castle to congratulate the family on their work, and add out small financial contribution to pay for this wonderful project, but have been unable to find an address on the B and B sites. Can you put us in touch, please. Liz Rae

  43. I was equally impressed by this episode like everyone else. Can C4 let us know whether and when a DVD will come out? I've alwasy wondered why it take years until DVDs are released. How about a short-term release of a 'Best Of' DVD (with the castle episode included of course)? Reading the comments below I'm sure it'd be a best seller.

  46. Am I going bonkers, or was the episode broadcast tonight (28th March), and billed as a repeat, actually significantly different from the earlier transmission of the same episode a week or so ago? I saw both. In the first transmission Kevin stayed at the castle as a B&B guest and ate a full English breakfast. In tonight's one he didn't.

  54. Great achievement. I always felt some of our ruined catles should be turned back into living accomodation and how amazing it would be to be able to do this. Maybe if we won the lottery but you have done it and with a modern twist to the roof that enhances the building. I'm sure the medieval owners would have approved. It was good that English Heritage allowed your rebuild eventually. They have a responsibility to keep the original features for the nation but no good if all is left is apile of rubble. Like many more we would like to come and stay in the castle at some stage. When you get through all the previous enquiries please send us the details. Kind regards Mr D. White

  78. I watched the first episode of this particular "Grand Design" when it first aired on T.V. and was totally blown away by the family who decided to take on a project such as this as it has always been my dream to do the same thing. However finances would not let me ever do something as wonderful as this. Congratulations to the family on creating a true masterpiece. I actually cried when I watched Kevin revisiting the family. Once again congratulations on this amazing achievement.

  92. running a guest house in a historic building like this is a fantastic way of making it pay for the upkeep and sharing your enjoyment and enthusiasm with other people who appreciate your hard work and good fortune in owning such a fantastic place. As the owner of a listed building run as a B&B, I know how important it is to yourselves. Congratulations to all involved and for letting Grand Designs follow your dream. Please send me details so that we can stay in this wonderful place. Thankyou!

  96. After just watching this episode I feel compelled as a teenager to continue on in my-own quest too follow an image of what my own grand design might be. This portrayal of an old castle combined with the beautiful attic/view point has reminded me that you can combine the new world with the old to create something spectacular. Looking ahead I often worry about what will be left for me to design on, will Scotland, a land that I freely love still be the beautiful masterpiece filled with history it is now? With new development happening all over the country I feel that the wonder and knowledge of Scotland’s history may be lost. Seeing myself in an old traditional house with the touch of new design looking over at the breathtaking sight that this castle has, only compels me more to continue on my research and planning into the perfect home for me.

  126. My wife and I hugely enjoyed last night's programme of the renovation of a Yorkshire Castle. What a wonderful project and congratulations to Francis and Karen Shaw for having the vision and determination to make it happen. However we would love to know how they achieved it at a cost of around £700K. The roof alone must have run into 6 figures. Did you forget Kevin to mention the substantial grant from English Heritage! We look forward to staying there when next up in Yorkshire. Great programme! Keep it up.

  133. Me and my hubby watched Grand Designs last night and couldn't believe what an amazing job Francis and Karen had done with the castle. We were so impressed that it inspired us to use Francis's architechural skills in building our future home. It's an Old Police Station in South Yorkshire, stood in front of a castle. The Police Station is currently derelict and dormant but we'd love to turn it into a modern home just like Francis and Karen. It would be great if we could make contact with Francis so that we can talk to him about our future plans and get some architectural designs. It's even more fantastic because Francis lives in Yorkshire. If this is possible, could Francis please e-mail me. Thank you.

The building was impressive enough when the original programme was broadcast but last night was something else. Heartiest Congratulations to the family who had the courage to make their dream come true! Could you please let me the address and contact deatils of this castle,so that we can book a room in B&B? Like fellow viewers I too would like to pay a visit to this wonderful B&B - could you please provide me with details or a web site I can log onto for further information. No doubt your programme will have done wonders for the B&B part of their business - as did your Channel Four programme featuring Castleford - the brdige is now regularly visited from people all over the Country so thanks for that. I look forward to receiving the relevant information as requested above and keep up the good work.

  200. Magical!! Absolutely moving!! They did a brilliant job to realise such an enormous project. What a dream that came true. Shame about English Heritage that they wield so much bureacratic power and can be so unhelpful and obstructive otherwise maybe more people might realise a dream and restore a crumbling monument. This does not detract in the slightest from such a fantastic achievement. Good luck with the B&B - I for one would love to stay as a paying guest.

I like many others have just watch the re-build (revisited) of this wonderful castle and a dream come true for two very inspirational people, and found it very hard not to be emotinal for two people I have never met! I watch Grand Designs in awe each time and think "if only" so just like many others the best I could hope for would be to stay as a paying guest, and as my husband I and will be celebrating 30 years of marriage this year I can't think of a more magical place to spend it. So please, please if there is a chance of this happening I would be grateful for any information available.

  209. Hi Kevin, Just watched the program on the renovation of the castle. Stunning end product, brilliantly finished, a real credit to the owners. Something I would like to have seen though was a closing comment from English Heritage. Surely this project should be lauded by them them as a triumph in terms of bringing one of our historic buildings back from the brink. They need to really get behind people like Francis and Karen Shaw who have the vision, drive and guts to take on such a project with all the inherent bureaucracy that comes with it. Maybe as a postscript you could get them to make a statement.

  216. Having just watched this tremendous episode of Grand Designs Revisited with regards Francis and Karen's castle in Yorkshire, I have to say I have been incredibly moved. Kevin's summation at the end has to be one of the most emotionally charged ever delivered on the programme and my God, what a place! Francis and Karen you have been incredibly brave and I for one absolutely salute you for making your dream a reality. The vision, the patience the commitment, the care and attention required to have made this happen would have had me running away to hide. Just simply brilliant. If it isn't possible to view the insides etc I fully undestand and respect there privacy etc, however I would still like to view on passing, so If you can let me have an address and the nearest point to view etc I would be most grateful. plus all other castels and 'shack' type buildings. Perhaps the one in Scotland which had several; families living in it and was bought for a quid I think. take care and keep on keeping on what you are doing Tom
