Four years ago Kevin McCloud met David and Greta Iredale, whose Huf Haus was built in a factory in Germany and put together on site.

It was one of the most striking and efficient processes Grand Designs has ever seen. But four years on, is the Huf Haus still delivering perfection?

The Project

David and Greta Iredale are seasoned builders. They built their first house in 1956; their second, nine years later. Having lived in it for 40 years, the timber house they designed themselves began to rot away so they decided to pull it down and replace it with a prefab. But this was no post-war flimsy prefab. This was a solid, German built, precision engineered Huf Haus.

Built in a factory, each part was constructed by a different team of skilled workers, very much like a car production line. The kit house, complete with doors, windows, fixtures and fittings was then shipped to site and put together like some gigantic jigsaw. And with a schedule tighter than a pair of lederhosen, the Germans promised to put the entire house together in just six days.

Kevin McCloud, Walton: Huf House, Grand Designs

True to their promise, the German construction team arrived at the crack of dawn but were delayed by the British crane driver, who arrived five hours late after being given the wrong address. Working late to make up for lost time, the German team succeeded in erecting the house in just six days as promised.

Impressed by the German's efficiency, designer David and Greta's next challenge was to personalise the inside of their stark home through intelligent interior design.

Four years on, Kevin is back to see if David and Greta have been able to stamp their own identity onto this distinctive building.

The Build

This hi-tech German prefab went up in just one week, but the Huf Haus is no ordinary kit house. What David and Greta got was a piece of the classic modern dream, all open-plan living with lots of space and lots of light.

Downstairs, a part-concealed kitchen at the front connects to a generous living and dining area at the back, separated from the garden only by large glass walls. There's still room on the ground floor for David's artist's studio.

Upstairs is split in two with a gallery in between overlooking the double height dining area. To one side is the master bedroom suite. On the other are two more bedrooms.

This is an unusual building for several reasons; it's not English, it's timber framed and it's topped by a split roof in three sections. Also, at around £450,000, it's not cheap.

  3. I'm a 3rd year civil engineering student. I've a project this year concerning buiding a eco friendly house. Hauf house seems an ideal choice. But for my brief a basement is needed, does anyone know if this has been done, or could be done?? If it's a stupid question I apologise!

  6. Grand Designs is a very encouraging show. I am very impressed with all the efforts that was put into producing these series. I try to never miss an episode. It's given me many ideas and insights as to how I could incorporate the many methods in my designs. Pity, not much could be said about this web site. Honestly, this site desperately needs a 'Grand Design'! The layout, access, positions, fonts, just the whole lot needs a complete rework. It is awful. If you're going to spend so much time and effort showing the world such opulent homes and unique cutting edge builds and designs in the 21 century, why must we be subjected to this substandard, bandwidth hungry, layout confused, last century, poor excuse of a website. It's not even centered! The home page looks nothing like the rest of your site! I am appalled!!

  11. To the person with the problems with the sash & case windows - if the windows are rotten, there are a number of companies who can manufacture replacements to the original design, and fit double glazing at the same time. This will look better and preserve the value of your traditional house. Also, new sash/case windows will have sophisticated draught exclusion systems as well as being easier to operate and clean. Speak to Blair Joinery in Scotland who supply a lot to traditional tenements in Glasgow. You will probably find this will solve your problems alone - most noise/draught issues are due to poor sealing. If you want to go further you can also fit secondary glazing internally. Again the appearance of the house will not be spoilt and the net effect will be absolutely zero sound or air infiltration, to an uncanny and possibly disturbing degree. This is far better than triple glazing or any of the other solutions, and UPVC windows just look totally out of context on a traditional house.

  12. Hi there,Many many thanks for a fantastic show,i live in Norway and catch your show in Spain where we are for 6 months of the year,i dont understand why David and Greta Iredale`s old wooden house was rotten only after 40 years,we have wooden houses in Norway that are much older and still going strong, one thing we do is to air the property every morning no matter what the weather,ie we open front and back doors and let the wind blow through which takes away any damp air from the previous night, keep up the good work and try getting to norway to watch a build there, Regards Chris hogden

  14. I love the Haufhaud design so much, ever since I saw the program when it was first broadcast I have aspired to one day live in one as the process of construction and the finished product are spectacular. This was the house that made me begin to appreciate buildings and find them fascinating - I am now half way through a building surveying degree and looking to try and incorporate Haufhaus into my disseration.
