"I think overall it’s fair to say it’s been a difficult and challenging process," says Ian. "Originally there were 45 conditions against the building ... all separate things that have to be signed off. So the architects have had quite a hard time." This is the tortuous path you tread with listed buildings. Conservation officers can get picky over the tiniest details and yet remain blasé over major changes.
The success story in this project is the opportunity to insert a steel walkway. It’s going to run in, out and along the old spine wall and is crucial to making this building usable. The planners bought into it because it's an obviously new addition in a modern, industrial style - but it has to fit exactly along a wall which bulges by up to 20cm along its length. It will take several months to build this walkway and then they have the challenge of installing it.
