Kevin's View

Kevin On Site, Surrey: The Regency Villa, Grand Designs

'When you buy an old house, you buy accumulated layers of history - paint, dirt, the bit missing from the moulding.'

'...The romance is living as part of an evolving story. Whereas Helen and Mark have taken a blank piece of paper and are starting with chapter one.'

'I salute them for their ambition and passion. Helen is very particular about detail, proportion and finish. But I wonder how it will feel.'

  2. OMG the wallpaper shot has left me scouring the web for a cheaper alternative. I loved the deep green chinese wallpaper - anybody got any ideas where I can source similar? The house was oddly beautiful, the roof definitely needed to be taller, but the huge amounting bill towards the end was crazy... was it worth it?

  4. Please can you let us know if the build was finished and if Helen and family were able to live in their dream home? Has Kevin revisited the project and can you post updates of the finished interior please.

  7. As all many of the comments below, I would love to see this house revisited. Something tells me they probably ended up selling it and that is why you have not revisited. I was glad to hear in the end that Helen, while passionate about the design and quality of the project, eventually gained some freedom from her perspective of not being 'owned' or consumed by possessions. Great work of art on her behalf!

  10. We would love to know if they managed to finish it and how it looks now as we ourselves are just about to embark on an almost identical house in Winchester.

  11. I think this episode shows a classic example of someone who cannot say "no". A beautiful house, but at what cost? The mortgage alone will mean long, heavy hours for many years to come and a burden on their shoulders that no amount of grand design can fix! I hope the house was finished though. It would be lovely to see it completed.

  12. I agree with the above commnents. Have just seen the Regency house in July 2009, but no indication what happened as program made well over a year ago. Come on Channel 4 tell us or arrange a re-visit by Kevin.

  14. It is such a shame that the house was not completed at the close of the program. The house planned to be and looks like it will be very impressive and a pleasure to live in. I hope that after all the owners hard work that now they are enjoying living there and have put the problems behind them. A Very Grand Design. We look forward to the revisited program very soon...

  15. So agree that this house should be revisited, so much so that I went online to try and find out any information I could, alas as we all know it wasn't! We loved watching every minute of it and we loved that Helen was so sassy! ;)

  16. I love all Grand designs but this was by far my favourite. The owner put her heart and soul into the project with such amazing passion, it was heart breaking to see her so emotionally crushed at the end f the episode. I would love to see a revisited episode and hopefully a family living the dream!

  17. Appalling waste of money. How many rooms can one small family possibly need? Do people really want to spend the rest of their lives just paying off their mortgages, or will they finaly realise that there are better things to do with your life. And, yes, it looks fake and pretentious.

  18. This was the by far the best Grand Design I have ever seen. The house design was fantastic and the owners came over really well throughout the whole show. I would like to know if the house ever got finished or if there is a follow up show planned.

  20. Watched this episode tonight and logged on to find out more info. on the 87p Chinese slate used on the vast roof of this beautiful home. We would like to know the supplier's details and any other relevant info. as we hope to start building in Ireland early next year and would ideally like to use 'real' natural slate on our project which is a product that is probhibitively expensive over here. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks.

  21. How did they manage to avoid having to fit double glazed windows to meet building regulations? I'd love to know.

  22. Please, PLEASE do a revisit to this one. It is the first house I have genuinely sat and gone 'I want one of those!' And I positively shrieked when I saw the wallpaper; a similar but much cheaper version resides under my bed at the moment (for when I can afford somewhere to put it up in!)

  23. One of the best Grand Designs of the entire series. It is a real shame the camera's were not allowed back to see the finished property. I think we should start a petition to make the currrent owners let the camera's back!

  24. Watched this on More 4 tonight and really hoped there would be a revisited episode for this house. The exterior looks so promising, it would be great to see if it was finished internally to such high standards.

  25. Absolutely agree with all the comments above. I scour the t.v. schedules for this episode as I built and moved into a similar house this year - would love to see how the house worked out. Please do a follow up if possible.

  26. Like the other comments, I too would love to know what eventually happened to this truly Grand Design. Was it ever finished to Helen's exacting standards? With all the "Grand Designs - revisited" programmes why have you never gone back to this house, as it must be one of the few designs that was not completed during the filming of the original show?

  27. Georgian, being my favourite form of architecture, made this one of my favourite Grand Designs, if not my most favourite of all. I have watched it many times drawing inspiration from every aspect, my only dislike however of this build is the fact that there hasn't been a revisited episode showing the final result. I would greatly like to know whether they had to sell it, or if they got it finished, or if Helen and Mark just want to keep to their privacy and resist showing their masterpiece to the rest of the world.

  28. I'd love to know what happened with this one. This episode was both mine and my girlfriend's favourite (being fans of Regency period architecture). We've often wondered why this episode is never repeated on Channel 4 and its sister channels or by any of the other channels that show repeats of many other episodes. Perhaps Channel 4 could shed some light on this???
