At the outset I was concerned for Mark and Debbie taking on such a project, especially as they appeared to be investing all their hope, as well as money, in expecting the house to change their lives and make them happy.
Also, in a traditional area where houses are made of stone, I feared that building a house of straw and wood would definitively label them as alternative, or 'marginal' as the French would have it.
I needn't have worried though. Mark has amazing determination - if one thing doesn't work he tries another, and the flip side of him being a worrier is he's fastidious. He has real attention to detail - the walls are dead straight where they should be and pleasingly curved to reflect the light in other places where it is appropriate.
All in all the building has integrity and modesty - it's healthy, simple and honest. It has become a positive statement about who they are and, ironically, a straw house has made them feel less marginal and allowed them to put down strong roots in the area.
