So often, sleek seductive boxes like this promise so much... and yet deliver so much that’s predictable.

This place, with all this glass, is going to offer an ever-changing relationship with the landscape around it. You’d expect that. What I find really interesting about it - surprising, even - is how it’s going to work as a family home.

By which I mean I think it is going to offer Sean, Tye, Andre and Mimi something which is much more practical, much more exciting, much more enriching than they have ever experienced before.

But then, that’s what you get when mum’s in charge!

  2. This was again a fantastic house ruined by horrendous interior taste. It seems that all these people build these brillinat houses and just wreck the interiors - WHY!! Surely the interior should be an extension of the building. It's just sad to see and a massive waste.

  4. It seems a little odd to me that to achieve a lower impact way of living involves the demolition of an existing home and the construction of a new one. And factories in Germany and Belgium are supplying components of the house, that doesn't strike me as low impact! I followed the link on the story which explains low impact living, here is a relevant section, http://www.channel4.com/4homes/diy-self-build/diy-build-advice/eco-projects/how-to-build-sustainable-housing-08-06-26_p_1.html the following are quotes from the html page I link to, Renovating Renovating an existing building is a highly sustainable way to build. If you are building from scratch, you can still use materials reclaimed from other buildings Think local Think local. If you buy materials from nearby, you cut out the need for long-distance transport, with all its wear and tear on the environment. You also contribute to the local economy. Likewise, using local skills and services helps to keep small communities alive. Is this Grand Design a failure??

  5. I would like to enquire if you are able to disclose the name of the Belgian window supplier for the project managed by Mimi De Costa. With the targets set out by Part L2A and local councils energy targets this could be an excellent solution for projects we are currently designing within the public sector.

  9. i think the house looked great very much in the style of Van Der Rohe and if your a few miles away from prying eyes why not!! Not so sure though on the choice of materials with such a clinical design and the way the wood both inside and out will colour and wear and attract dirt I know Rainbow pools do blown concrete pools. And sixteen weeks!! please!! The glass itself would be on at least 12 weeks procurement, not to mention the staircase. Do wish the people would consult with a planning engineer (ie ME) before they commence. Amazed that with a twenty week overun they still only overspent by 5%, what an achievement...

  10. Hi, well done for achieving your ultimate goal and for a great job of project management. Would you be kind enough to supply the name and contact detail's of the manufacturer of the swimming pool render material? It looked stunning when the pool was full of water and reflected the light from the room and from outside. Regards, Jon.

  11. Another very self indulgent project by wealthy people again. This is of little relevance to the world that most viewers will be living in. Please keep it real Kevin and remember that there is a credit crunch on.

  12. To the bird lover a very valid point. Why, oh why, did the local planning dept not consider that very important element when they passed your plans. The design of the house(if you can call it that, is just a box) and with its sharp lines does NOT blend in with the beautiful countryside. I perfectly understand the need for creature comforts but please, not to the detriment, or should I say demise, of our beautiful winged creatures.

  14. Hey Mimi, yes you HAVE triumphed! We have thoroughly enjoyed your journey this evening. The reflections of the pool on the timber walls, invite us round when the whole place turns silver-grey and we'll bring a bottle of wine and two towels!

  16. Please can you tell me what substance was used to render the interior of the Swimming pool? this material looked amazing when complete as it gave the water a blue appearence, Please provide name & contact details of supplier.I would also appreciate information on the Solar heating system that was used in the pool area and the extra energy that could then be reused to heat the room. Regards, Trish Fitzpatrick.

  17. Can't be sure about this SanZan but the bungalow may have had to be demolished as a planning condition since it looks as if the site is in the countryside/green belt. This is often the case.

  18. Very interesting and informative regarding lastweeks episode 'Headcorn Mimimalism'. The concept behind the heating, using the windows was intriguing. I am very interested in finding out the Belgian company manufacturing the windows. Could anyone help me in trying to find out this information?

  19. It seems like a real shame to tear down that bungalow. They could have done a lot with it. Britains' Best Home and the Home Show have shown many fine examples of modernist retrofits, some of which were really good value. The bungalow must have also significantly increased the original purchasing price of the land. You have to add that and the cost of demolition onto the cost of this build. They'll have bought it near the top of the market too.

  20. I am worried about the promotion of so much glass in new buildings. Doesnt anyone care for wildlife any more? Kevin are you getting any feedback from the RSPB? So many birds are breaking their necks! This house is the worst yet for confusing wildlife>

  24. Wood fiber insulation was used to insulate the solid laminated timber panels. The temperature of the glazing is very low. the voltage to each glass pane is also very low - equivalent to that of a low voltage bulb. An infrared coating reflects heat into the room. Quite cleverly the coatings work hardest to prevent heat loss. Thats what makes it so efficient.

  26. I want to know more about these windows. I thought you had to have very high temperatures to benefit from radiant heat. Not enough information here on something which could be technically interesting and innovative.
