Kevin McCloud meets Julie and Mark, whose Grand Design is a stunning Miami-style beach house on a seafront plot of land overlooking the south Devon coast.

Interior, East Devon: The Beach House, Grand Designs

Julie and Mark have had several holidays in Miami, and Julie wanted to recreate the outdoor beachfront lifestyle back in England, living in a house full of light and sun, within easy reach of the waves.

The house is very much Julie's vision and she is passionate about the design. It is a series of dazzling white interlocking boxes, topped with a flat zinc roof.

Dramatic double-height windows to the front and rear of the house flood it with sunshine. The main open-plan living area is upstairs and boasts a circular kitchen, a fireplace suspended in the middle of the room and a huge curved deck extending out towards the sea. A footbridge leads off the living area to the master bedroom, with an en-suite bathroom complete with bath overlooking the sea.

  1. In answer to jon, approx two and a half times over budget would be a conservative figure. I agree with him that the budget is a very important part of the show and believe that future episode should have an audited figure as the costs some of the participants have owned up to are simply not believable. Just ask any builder.

  2. Anyone with any information on how far they ended over budget? It must be quite a substantial figure as by contacting grand designs in the first place they must have known this was an important part of the show, yet have chosen not to disclose the figure. I wish kevin had been more forceful. Cheers in advance.

  6. Like David (08.05.09) I am interested by the name and supplier of the "product" ( 3 membranes including wire ?) used on the wood to ensure that render would fix/adhere to it.

  8. Is this it! The last episode of the season turns out to be a repeat of an old episode from season 5. This is on top of having 5 revisited episodes in the current season (which are only really 10 mins of new content) Please C4 go back to the old season layout - 7 or 8 episodes with 1 or 2 revisits. For the last 2 seasons it feels like the content is being stretched out to make as many episodes at as little cost.

  11. Just wondering if you would be able to tell me the name of Julie's tanning company. I'm very interested in buying some of her products. Also the structure of the house was amazing, and the project was an inspiration to people wanting to build their own suburban home.

  12. I was so frustrated when they didnt say how much they ended up spending, it put the hole project out of context. Especially as she put so much emphasis on getting things cheaply. obviously wasnt that cheap if they wouldn't even say how much they overspent by! a dissapointing ending to an interesting program. At least Kevin stood up for architects this time and actually mentioned the planning process which so often gets overlooked! Thanks Kev

  14. render was probably Alsecco..or very similar maybe Sto bath filler is going to really irritate after a few weeks, that is a design concept that will never become mainstream....Kevin was clearly unimpressed with that novelty...good quality of finish in general
