Kevin On Site, Cumbria: The Underground House

Kevin's View

'There is nothing flashy about this place. There are no Italian sofas, there's no sleek kitchen - but there again, like their managed ventilation of this place, it's a breath of fresh air.'

'What I love about this place is that it isn't about showing off; it's all about a philosophy and trying to change the way you live.'

'Because so much of this design is about what's out there. About nature; the elements and the environment - and the love of it, the enjoyment of it, and a healthy respect for it.'

Cumbria Video

The finished house might not be entirely to Kevin's taste but Helen, Phil and their team have accomplished something remarkable - an underground house with swathes of natural sunlight and a truly striking facade.

  2. Reference Michael Andrew's comment on 24/7/2009 I have just watched the Grand Designs Revisited episode on the Cumbrian Underground House & noted that it was mentioned on more than one occasion that Helen Reddy was the local vet , having taken time off work to have her first child. However it wasn't explained what the Vetspace was for exactly. I wondered whether it was like a surgery or consulting room from which to run her veterinary practice?

  3. Is it possible to get in touch with the owners of this house? My friend who lives near Chipping Lancashire has an ideal site at the bottom of his garden and I want to study the feasibility of his site. Thanks Edward Cook.

  5. Does anyone have the details of the air circulation heat exchanger that went into this house? The one that brings in fresh air from outside, but through a heat exchanger so the interior warmth is not lost in winter. It doesn't seem to be listed amongst the Suppliers here on the site.
