Kevin's View

Bath: The Kit House. Kevin McCloud.

Wow, what a story - what an epic tale. It started out as a neat domestic drama and turned into the Indiana Jones and the Temple of Mud. And then this brilliant building was snatched from the jaws of doom.

And who was it that rescued it, who was it that dragged their dream back their dream back into reality and re-built it? Well that would be Tiffany of course.

You might find that idea a bit fanciful, the stuff of fiction, but in the real world buildings like this need heroes and heroines just as much - otherwise nothing would ever get out of the ground.

Bath Video

It's not a pretty sight - as building work begins on this tricky hillside plot, excavation work causes hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of damage to a neighbour's garden.

  1. The bath stone has indeed gone on the front and I think there is going to be a follow up episode in the spring of the new year showing the completed house. Company is www.baufritz.co.uk for those asking.

  7. One of the houses was built on foundations "Posts" sunk into the ground - instead of the usual brickwork. Where can I find out about purchasing these? Are they available in the UK? And are they prohibitively expensive - if not, why aren't they used more often?

  19. Wow, my first episode of Grand Designs and the Bath kit home was amazing. I am about to set off on the adventure of having my custom home built (in Canberra Australia) and this long and dramatic story gives me hope as to the light at the end of the tunnel. A great episode.

  20. 28-04-09 My wife Kay & I follow your programme all the time it's available here in NZ it shows on Sky Living Programme. Kevin's presentation is excellent likewise his personality and the down to earth ability to "get stuck in and help". Last night we watched the ' "log cabin" approach/design from Finland and were very impressed ,particularly in connection with the logging/stripping machine used in the forest and the window triple glazing system. Please ,if poss' advise on contacts concerning these products/machinery. Again first class viewing and excellent presentation. Roy Hanns

  24. I see that the house is on the market. The impression given at the start of the show was that the couple intended to live there for a number of years. It would be interesting to know why they are selling it in such a relatively short space of time after completion?
