'I think all architects want to build their own house, so I'm like a pig in mud,' says Andrew Tate, the proud owner of a 100-foot converted water tower near Amersham, Buckinghamshire.

Grand Designs: Amersham, The Water Tower

The tower is about five and a half metres in diameter, so it has been divided. Bedrooms and the main living areas are contained in a single storey extension. Glazed walls to the extension capitalise on heat from the sun, and the connecting walls are made with polystyrene blocks filled with concrete, providing effective insulation.

It took Andrew more than a year to get planning permission on what is a greenbelt site, but councillors and local residents were won over by his plan to conceal the extension behind a grassy bank, which blends in with the banks of the surrounding reservoirs.

Perhaps not surprisingly, Andrew's prime tip for other self builders is to get a good architect.

  1. Spotted it ! just watched Kevin Mcloud in another programme climbing a church inside and out ? and the write up states Kevin Mcloud an experienced climber ?yet in this episode he clearly expreses his fear of the height at the top of the water tower ? " I need to go out more i really do.

  2. As with Angie and Adrian my wife and I also just watched the episode of this build with the revisited and are wondering if Kevin has gone back to see how they went with the tower refurbishment. We think it was a fantastic and exciting build and would love to see the final result.

  3. The modern addition to the water tower seemed to have had to be hidden from view. On the slopes to the raised ground around (1)some form of sheeting was laid on the ground first, and the (2)rubber 'mesh' sheeting was laid, earth put on and then turf laid. I need to use the same method on my own property and would like the product names for (1) and (2). Many thanks

  4. A&A would like to know if and when the Water Tower was completed in Amersham. Just viewed revisited but the couple had not yet started work on the tower itself. Where is the rest of the programme???

  5. This was one of the first properties I sold. I worked for a firm who acted for Three Valleys Water Company, we were in the middle of the last property recession and it was difficult to sell then as it is now. The conversion looks great and it will be interesting to see how the conversion of the tower progresses. I do recall that the view from the top is fantastic.

  6. This method is used in europe for the last 10 year. You also get the polystyrene bricks with steel frame. Its a great method which improves and makes work easier. Hope I gets picked up by the UK construction
