'At the start I felt the project didn't have a great chance of succeeding. The building plans had no detail on them and Derek and Jen's freeform construction approach meant the builders didn't know from one day to the next what to expect.'
Halfway through I thought the building was less than the sum of its parts, and looked like a giant merry-go-round plonked in the middle of some waste ground. On the plus side, however, I do like the roof - it is sharp, angular and dynamic. Made of triangles it is shaped like a stealth bomber.
The ground floor too is hugely successful as the windows give a cinema scope panorama of the reservoir, and the dark wooden doors and terracotta-coloured render give the house a Hollywood film set look.
In conclusion, though, I can't say I like the design. But Derek and Jen's absolute independence has created an idiosyncratic, even eccentric house and one thing it is certainly not is mediocre.
