Kevin's View

Kevin Onsite: Alicante: The Eccentric Villa

'At the start I felt the project didn't have a great chance of succeeding. The building plans had no detail on them and Derek and Jen's freeform construction approach meant the builders didn't know from one day to the next what to expect.'

Halfway through I thought the building was less than the sum of its parts, and looked like a giant merry-go-round plonked in the middle of some waste ground. On the plus side, however, I do like the roof - it is sharp, angular and dynamic. Made of triangles it is shaped like a stealth bomber.

The ground floor too is hugely successful as the windows give a cinema scope panorama of the reservoir, and the dark wooden doors and terracotta-coloured render give the house a Hollywood film set look.

In conclusion, though, I can't say I like the design. But Derek and Jen's absolute independence has created an idiosyncratic, even eccentric house and one thing it is certainly not is mediocre.

  1. I love this house! The idea of having everything my family needs on one plot of land is stunning! I'd love this house - so much character and glass is nice in a property. :)

  2. I hate every minute of this house...I cant believe the spanish goverment let them built a house like that in there! It is awful..like he says its like a shopping centre in the middle of a nice place. An also how rude..they move to Spain and they dont even bother trying to learn the language..

  4. Thanks for the directions to this wonderful place David Bates! Well worth the visit, although didn't use the activities except for tea and biscuits. Really wanted to look at the house and it is certainly worth the trip,if not for the activities, house, just the setting. Beautiful place.

  5. We watched the programme and couldn't believe our luck when it opened to the public. The whole family are fanastic but it's obviously extremely hard work for all. We had 4 hours canoeing on the lake for 25 euros (bargain!)and then free use of the pool for the rest of the day. I just wonder if they can keep this up....hope so.

  7. Have just returned from this area, and really enjoyed the time we spent in the grounds of the beautiful villa. The pool area is lovely. It costs 6 euro each to swim there, free if you take part in any other activities like horse riding, quad biking, etc. Jen and family are friendly and welcoming. Jen lead me on a most enjoyable horse ride around the area, and pointed out fauna and flora in abundance. And the view, WOW! Well worth a vist.

  9. I have seen this house, we are not allowed in for the same reasons I wouldn't want the public walking all over my home.I enjoyed a cup of earl grey tea while sitting by the pool soaking up the sunshine, I could live here, Good on you Jenni

  11. The property is on the side of Embalsa de Pedrera a reservoir off the CV95 road from Torrevieja to Orihuela. You turn off to go to Torremendo and follow the road round the lake, once you get almost to the opposite sign the house is visible from the road, there is a small track sign posted to La Casa de La Pedrera. this is now an outdoor activity centre. see article in Coastrider newspaper this week's edition 31st March. Coastrider staff had their conference there
