Rich: How much winemaking experience did you have prior to this endeavour, and on what scale?
Monty: To learn about wine I decided early on to get hands-on experience – so I worked in Bordeaux, Chile, California and Germany, watching and learning. It mainly involved scrubbing buckets and dragging hoses and pumps in wineries, as well as shit-shovelling in vineyards.
Rich: How did the process compare going it alone in France?
Monty: My wine was handmade essentially – I worked in a massive (7 million litre) winery in Chile where wine was made at the push of a button. I made less than five-thousand litres of wine in France... just one tank.
