Rich: Was it daunting setting up on your own for the first time?
Monty: I've worked on vineyards before but this is the first time I've not been working for somebody else - it's like the difference between being a waiter in a restaurant and choosing the menu! That is a big step, so I’m pleased that I made a small profit first time out. The way I structured the project gave me the best possible chance of making a profit.
There are inevitable risks - if you get hail then your grapes are ruined and there's nothing you can do, for example. But I've tried to dodge the avoidable risks while riding my luck on risks beyond my control and it seems to have paid off. I don't want to count my chickens as we're still only part-way through the second harvest and there's a lot that could happen weather-wise, but at least my first white is now safely fermenting in barrels and we should have the red harvested by next week.
