Rich: Any regrets? What worked for you and what didn’t?
Monty: My wine has sold out and perhaps, with hindsight, I probably sold it too cheaply but I didn't anticipate quite how well it would be received. Everyone's said it's a great wine and I maybe could have charged a little bit more than I did. I made a tiny profit, which is good because a lot of people don't. The incentive is there to grow and get bigger now. With future profits my aim is to reinvest in the land and to convert vineyards that haven't been organically farmed.
I like to avoid paperwork and do deals on a handshake - that's how I’ve always done it and I find things just work better that way. Eric, the guy I rent from, is happy with that and I prefer a relationship based on trust than a formal agreement enshrined in a written contract. It works for me and it works for him.
