And the verdict? “Young, fruity, juicy actually,” says Alistair. “I like it. It’s got real character. Nice sunny, rustic feel to it. This isn’t a grand, serious wine - it’s a lovely friendly, juicy sort of wine.”
Good news for Monty.
“He’s not set out to make Latour, he’s set out to make a nice drink,” continues Alistair. “And I’ll go for that.”
The wine’s obviously rather good, but to break even, Monty has to flog it for at least €3.50 a bottle. That’s about £2.50 back home.
“3.50 would actually place it at about 7.99,” says Alistair, “so that’s fair. But this is a hand sell. People aren’t just going to rush in and say, ‘ah, Carignon from Monty Waldin’. We’re going to have to tell them about it.”
The deal may well be struck, but Alistair is expecting Monty to help with the marketing.
Until he bottles the wine, Monty has no idea if he’ll make a profit.
