Monty plans to make a light, fruity red table wine that he can flog to the Brits back home. He’s on a vineyard-hunting expedition in a stunning area of south-west France, close to the border with Spain across the Pyrenees. This is known as the French Catalan country – an area of outstanding natural beauty.
There are 750,000 acres of vines here; a third of all the grapes in France. However, because of recent overproduction, thousands of vineyards are being sold off. Monty thinks he can bag a bargain. He quickly discovers that even in this relatively cheap spot, when the locals spot ‘Johnny Foreigner’ coming, prices rocket.
