Beer can. Middlesbrough: Worst Place to Live

This Teesside town is responsible for more than a few 'firsts', not least its claim to be the first town in the world to owe its existence to a railway, owing to its proximity to the Stockton and Darlington Railway which was joined to Middlesbrough in the 1830's.

Phil and Kirstie. Middlesbrough: Worst Place to Live

Phil And Kirstie's View

So what makes it the worst place to live in the UK? For starters health problems are at critical levels, with over a quarter of the inhabitants admitting to regular binge drinking. And there's the crime; Robbery, burglary, sexual assaults, violent crimes and car theft are all more than twice the UK average.

So live round here and you're in for double trouble! But down on the waterfront at Middlehaven the tide is turning, with a whopping £500 million being pumped into this vast new development, which is great news as long as Middlesbrough's criminal contingents don't set their sights on this place!

Area Guide: Middlesbrough

History lessons aside, perhaps this goes some way to explaining why Middlesbrough is so connected at the heart of the north east transport infrastructure. Major transport hubs, including Teesside International Airport and Teesport - the second largest port in the UK - are all within a short distance, making travel exceptionally easy.

Regeneration has long been a part of Middlesbrough's development, with the Middlehaven scheme giving a much-needed facelift to the Docklands area, with the £500 million project being designed to bring new business and housing.

MIMA, the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, takes that regeneration one step further - a £14.2 million cultural hotbed which seems to be the centrepiece of the town's tourism strategy, it's a new art gallery which opened at the beginning of 2007 in an attempt to bring international works and visitors to the Tees Valley. Better still, it's free to the public.

But while the more cultural-minded people of Middlesbrough and its visitors peek at the fine examples on display at MIMA, spare a thought for Cleveland Police, whose paperwork steadily piles up on its collective desks. With a local crime rate comfortably ahead in comparison with the rest of the UK on average, they clearly have their work cut out. Vehicle-related thefts are nearly three times more common here than the average across England, so parking your car out on the street could be more of a gamble than visiting the super casino which is being planned by Tees Valley Regeneration.

Performance at schools also fares unfavourably. For average GCSE and Key Stage Four scores, Middlesbrough is among the lowest boroughs in the country, proving that education is also a concern for a location which was ranked the sixth least desirable place to live in 2006, and fifth the previous year.

  1. Well, the town that comes up again and again in conversations as being a place not worth going to unless you have to is Baskingstoke (not that I've been there).

  2. this programme showed the bad parts (South Bank,Grangetown etc) but failed to show the Mima and how smart it looks. There has not been any damage to it yet(touch wood) so how com Middlesbrough is the worst place to live?? The fountains near the Mima look spectacular and the town centre is a fantastic place to shop. as for the transporter bridge, it is unique and there is no ohter bridge like it. The steelworks are a huge part of the history of Middlesbrough and have helped to make many famous landmarks all across the world. Just because we have higher crime/drug/binge drinking rates doesnt mean we are the worst place to live. Many people like to have a good time and this is happening all across the UK- we only live once! :-) Bill and Ben

  7. I travel a lot in my job. I stay in a town for 2 or 3 years normally then move on. I'm a Londoner. Let me tell you, Brixton, Thornton Heath and parts of Hackney are far rougher than Middlesbrough. You've got everything you need here and the people are genuinely very friendly. I've had no one damage my car, try to steal it or in anyway try to commit a crime against me to date. I've been here nearly 2 years now. There are some run down parts but so many improvements are going on. Where the hell else do you get Parmos anyway? Compare this place to Horsham, the people are snobby and uptight, the place is boring, there is absolutely no night life other than a few out of the way pubs. Then you'd be lucky if someone talked to you. You better be into ploughing/fox hunting/hedge cutting/farming/dog racing or the like to even strike up a conversation. Most people go drink driving round country lanes, way to fast in their land rovers and this a a far better place to live? I don't think so.

  8. What a load of claptrap. my Former Manager was interviewed at the filming of the audience talk show linked to this and we're well aware they only wanted the responses that suited them. Also they didn't film the nicer bits of Middlesbrough because it didn't fit with the type of image they are trying to portray. As for school results, I went to a regular school in Middlesbrough, which as it happens has the best results in the UK outside of the private school sector. Check your facts Kirsty and Phil. We wouldn't mind if it was a true impression of Middlesbrough but it isn't at all. And have you not visited Saint Pauls in Bristol, a million times worse but that doesn't get a mention as it's in the south. I suggest you take a look at the below link to get an idea of the real Middlesbrough. Meanwhile those living in the town will be very pleased to know that narrow minded snobs such as Kirsty and Phil won't be moving to our lovely town anytime soon. http://news.bbc.co.uk/local/tees/hi/tv_and_radio/newsid_8193000/8193971.stm

  11. Well I went there twice (10 years apart) and found people really warm and friendly! Last time I got a flat tyre coming into the town and before I could do it myself two chaps changed it for me. Everyone was easy to chat with and we got an offer to put us up for the night (we'd come up all the way from Hertfordshire). Don't think you'd get that everywhere, particularly in some of those places Kirsty and Phil list in their "best" places that are populated by too many (eeurrgh!!!) anal types! I was really impressed.

  14. middlesbrough is a good place! i don't live there but i visit it enough times to see for myself what kind of town it is. a friendly, popular and interesting place- but you'll only see that if your willing to look beneith the run down areas, which you don't realise every town has. i agree on the fact it needs improvements, which are evidently already going on.

  15. I am not from Middlesbrough but my partner is. I have visited Middlesbrough on many occasions. I feel that the comments made by the presenters are unjustified. There was a time when Middlesbrough was an ICI Industrial area full of chimneys. There are rough places but you get that in most large towns and cities across the UK. In the past decade though Middlesbrough has mage a huge changeover and has CCTV put in place to target crime. The academic results of schools in Middlesbrough and North Yorkshire area are now above average to that of the UK average. There have been some major developments in Shopping facilities offering a wide range of consumables and leisurely activities. There are some fantastic culinary restaurants, bars and pubs to visit for an evening out. The cost of living in Middlesbrough is not as expensive as other parts of the UK which is a huge benefit in this financial climate. The people are friendly, chatty and welcoming and put the kettle on as soon as you step in the door. There are lots of places of beauty to visit with the Yorkshire Moors overlooking Middlesbrough, and the nearby coastal towns of Whitby. For anyone wanting to find out about an area do your homework look at sites like www.upmystreet.com, dfes website for info on school academic tables, or just simply do a google search and read news articles on the area to find out the latest developments.

  20. Your obviously lying. Middlesbrough is a rather decent place to live. Its got everything you need nearby and even has popular attractions such as mima and teeside park. Channel 4 only look at the negative points such as rough areas which you get in every town. So sort your facts out.

  24. I do sometimes despair living within middlesbrough council catchment area as there are some justified bad spots but for a town of 144 thousand to be labelled worst in britain is laughable. If those guardian reading lentill eating presenters would like to come and see middlesbrough finest, why not try greytowers house, stewart park, dorman museum, leafy linthorpe etc etc. kirsty and phil dont take pictures of the council estate opposite your mock tudor and pass it off as middlesbrough as you are painting a distorted picture backed up with stats from a government which does not know its left form it s right. go figure...........

  25. I live roughly five miles from Middlesbrough's centre, towards the Cleveland hills. I used to do an awful lot of driving through other towns and found some of them to be fairly distressing places to be. And I have to admit that it always felt better to be home again. The reasons given above for Middlesbroughs bad position are not at all true. I have had my car radio 'nicked' once in the last fifteen years. And I hardly ever hear of anyone haveing bother. I really think that this needs to be updated, now. None of us Teessiders like to live under the shadow of the industry. But many-a-town has it too.

  26. middlesbrough has two beautiful parks being Albert and stewarts park.It has easy access to both the seaside and the North Yorkshire Moors with all the scenery and outdoor space it creates. The james cook Hospital is a very modern newly built facility which is due to be expanded plus they have air ambulance service. The town centre is modern with a very good selection of shops certainly better tha aberdeen where i live.
