Streets. Town Centre. Kingston upon Hull: 2nd Worst

With a past that can best be described as multi-hued - simply because 'colourful' fails to do it justice - Hull has often been at the epicentre of wars, and not just in the city centre on a Saturday night.

Phil Spencer. Kingston upon Hull: 2nd Worst

Phil And Kirstie's View

Kingston upon Hull (or should it be Hell?) sits in isolation on the north east coast of England. It's nabbed the number two spot thanks to some terrible crime stats, and who's to stop them? Last year, Hull's boys in blue were named as the joint worst performing force in the UK.

Hull was saved from the number one spot by its impressive sporting facilities, although we're not entirely sure that they're being used. But things may be about to change, as when you're on the bottom, where else is there to go?

Area Guide: Kingston upon Hull

William Wilberforce, the leader of the parliamentary campaign against the slave trade, was born in Hull and still stands as one of the city's best known exports, along with fish and a fondness for rugby league. With a myriad of top sporting teams in ice hockey, baseball and the ubiquitous rugby league (Hull Kingston Rovers compete in the Super League but are just one of hordes of teams that play the sport here), there's certainly a case to argue that it's a male-dominated city.

That theory is reinforced with the same kind of steel used to build the Humber Bridge, the fourth longest single-span suspension bridge in the world. Indeed, the hourly rate of pay for female residents in Hull - named as the least desirable place to live in the UK in 2005 - is on average £2 per hour lower than the mean rate across the UK, doing nothing to dispel the fact that women get a particularly bum deal.

On the whole though, unemployment is a problem, being nearly 3 per cent higher than the average national rate, with 8.3 per cent of the working-age population unemployed, compared with an average of only 5.3 per cent among the national population at large. Residents' employment prospects are unlikely to be helped by the general lack of success in secondary education, with only 26 per cent of pupils achieving five GCSE passes including English and Maths.

A plus is the fact that property in the area is generally pretty cheap, and despite the average house prices in Hull doubling in the past five years, they are still barely half the national average - there's a statistic to mull over while devouring those plentiful cod and chips.

  1. "impressive sporting facilities, although we're not entirely sure that they're being used" That there shows how little they know about the place and therefore anything they said should be taken as completely asinine. Clearly they did zero research. If they had bothered to actually visit the place it wouldn't be anywhere near this list.

  2. Well if I was a southern millionaire I wouldn't want to live in Hull either. I would walk around turning my nose up at anyone that has to work for a living. Luckly I am not so I'm quite happy living in this area and I'm proud to have gone Hull's University (which I'm sure would surprise Phil and Kirstie that some of us manage to get there in the first place). This continued grading of best and worst places is a pointless excercise based on bias. To be honest Hull's better of with likes of Kirstie and Phil not visiting!

  3. I don't even want to read this articile, as I know what they'll mention. My family lived in Hull for generations. And I adore the city. It has charm and characters you don't find anywhere. You have to live here to judge it. Statistics don't cut a fair evaluation on this brilliant city. Can't judge a school on it's results when you don't know what the students, school, or teachers are like. And anyway, every city has a few bad marks. We're a city rising up, and we're proving our point. Preirship football team, holding the Clipper Race. We're a city with charming past as well, I've spent a day reading up on the city over the internet finding out things that set us apart. All I can say is, don't look at statitics and actually come live here. Snobs have no right at deciding upon what makes a good city or not when they show no real understanding of the city.

  4. I think this whole article is pointless lass year when i left school nearly every pupil in my school got well over 5 gcses including maths and english so that bit about gcse results is wrong. Second point we don't really have a high crime rate anymore ive been to orchard park so called worst place in hull and it doesn't really seem that bad anymore because everything looks really new. so basicly the so called people that make up the best and worst cities to live are the people from down south that cant be arsed to come up north and see for themselves how bad hull is supposed to be. I 100% DISSAGREE WITH THIS ARTICLE I HOPE OTHER PEOPLE DO ASWELL

  5. I'm with you Ben Kirk! I'm sick to death of Hull being dissed so much! It is so obvious if you know a little geography, that there is a pattern to these 'best and worst' places. Out of the 20 best places to live, 70% are in the South East of England, I wonder where the 'list creators' are from!!! Of the 20 worst places to live, all but 7 (2 in Wales) are above the midlands; so the NORTH!!! Hull has so much to boast about...its marina, Queens Gardens, internationally recommended university, stunning villages, short ride from the sea-side, excellent shopping facilities inc. lots of independent boutiques, Queen Victoria Square with Maritime Museum, art gallery and City Hall, the Humber Bridge, KC Stadium, low property prices, friendly people; the list is endless. People need to pay more attention to Hull and realise its qualities and maybe that way we will be praised rather than frowned upon!!!

  6. What I find most offensive about this article is its complete misrepresentation. Yes Hull has a lot of crime but all of which is relatively minor unlike areas of other cities which have high poverty rates coupled with serious crime that are overlooked simply because there are richer areas in the cities. Hull however has virtually no Gun problem, no knife problems just graffitti, assaults and thefts. (by the way I have lived on three of the roughest estates here and ive never been robbed!). As for the lack of exports there are far more than simply Wilberforce that is ridiculous! As for were not sure the sports facilities are being used this is simply snobish atitude of an elitist class all the facilities are overstretched with popularity so why find fault with this clear positive! I'm sick of it by 2015 Hull will be one of europes most regenerated cities SO IF ANYONE IS AS OUTRAGED AS ME COMMENT ME BACK AND LETS DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS!

  8. Having lived in various places in Surrey, Bucks, the midlands and Hull several years I have to disagree with your conclusion. The locals are friendly and welcoming, which is more than can be said for some places. It has a pleasant city center, excellent universities, a world class aquarium, good road, rail and sea links, plenty of nightlife, good restaurants, lovely countryside and seaside and plenty more beside. Bransholme is somewhat rough, but to paint the whole area as such is a disservice. I could happily live in Hull again.

  9. It's not that bad a place to live. Yeah, it's bad, but there are worse places, and at least people are friendly. And it's not like everyone doesn't care - the local schools try really hard, but when all your intake comes from a poverty-stricken background, what can you do? Hull needs less sympathy and more action, because all non-residents do is ignore and dismiss it.
