In the Channel 4 programme Location, Location, Location: Best and Worst live, broadcast on Wednesday 17th October 2007, an incorrect statistic was given for the number of homeless families in Stoke-on-Trent.
The statistic quoted in the programme stated that 'Nearly one in five families here [Stoke-on-Trent] is officially homeless'. This statistic was sourced by the producers of the programme from a table published in the National Health Service's Health Profile 2007 for Stoke-on-Trent. However, after further checks we have discovered that a note at the bottom of the table was misinterpreted by the producers and the homelessness statistic set out in the NHS Health Profile was in fact limited only to '...per cent of households on local authority housing register who are statutorily homeless...'.
Channel 4 and IWC Media wish to apologise to the Mayor and people of Stoke-on-Trent for this unfortunate and unintentional error. As soon as this came to light immediate steps were taken to remove the erroneous statistic from all future repeats of the programme and the programme website.
Stoke-on-Trent's placing in the worst list was based upon independent statistical analysis of the most up to date data on a range of subjects available across the whole of the UK. Data relating to the percentage of homeless households in each Local Authority Area did not form part of the statistical analysis and therefore Stoke-on-Trent's ranking on the worst list was not affected by this error.
