This week Amanda Lamb is helping Alex and Kate Edwards from Wrexham find a new home in beautiful Melbourne. With its café culture and restaurants in abundance, this couple of foodies will be spoilt for choice.

With two young energetic children, the Edwards’ need a lot of space to keep them entertained, and with a host of guests lining up already to come and stay they are looking for a big enough property to house them all.

Amanda has quite the task with this family who are eager to be in a small family friendly area, but close enough for Alex to be able to commute into the city for work. However, the real question is with a budget of £260,000, will Amanda able to find somewhere that lives up to their quaint village in Wales around the second largest city in Australia?

  1. hi, me and my family are looking to move to Sydney. But we don't know where to start! I was wondering how to apply one of your house-hunting programmes?-as this would be so valuable to our search:)

  2. Hi there - there's a great website: www.pomsinoz.com.au, which is an invaluable chat/forum for many questions about all areas of Oz. In my case, it's been a great source of finding people who've lived here and now want to return to the homeland .... like me .... after 12 years .... It can get quite cold in Melbourne in Winter and the houses are not as well-built as many English homes. Double-glazing hasn't really taken off and proper 'central heating' (rather than 'ducted') is very expensive to install. Mind you, all trades people are expensive here ... You also need air conditioning throughout your house for the stinky hot summers .... oh and the flies are a complete pain in Summer! The commercial TV channels are rubbish and Melbourne is obsessed with AFL football - so be prepared to become indoctrinated - or rebel, like us! Think seriously about emigrating, especially if you have older parents ... visitors are great for the first few years, but it's a hell of a distance and expense, particularly when there are other great places around Europe to visit and the family visits start to wane .... otherwise, Melbourne is a fantastic city: clean and safe in the suburbs, lots of shopping malls, cheap petrol (but cars are expensive). Mornington is a popular beach town for English folk, but it's probably an hour's commute into the city.

We have looked on line and there is a wide mix of properties from the Heritage homes to the very modern. i prefer the warm feeling you seem tog et from the heritage homes as I don't like to super styled ultra trendy home. Please, please can you help us, as we are worried about making the wrond decision. Many thanks

  12. Wow, so many people just like myself that you have made attracted to 'a better life down under' from the very popular tv show. I have so many questions that i can't find all the answers to on the internet. So maybe you can help me and other families like me to move down under as i've yet to see a typical family like mine on any of your series so far. Me and my husband are both in our 20's and have 3 children (2 are from my previous partner) aged 6, 5, 8months. We don't own our own home and although my husband is a manager we are not really classed as skilled workers. My husband has 2 great uncles who live in Adelaid and we have financial backing from my father who encourages us to make the move while our children are young. He has fond memories as a child of when his parents (my grandparents) moved to Victoria for a short time. Is there any hope for us??

  17. Hello, My wife and I (plus a 4 and 5yr old) are considering emigrating to Australia when I finish my Army career in 30 months time. Your program is great and we have talked to many people about it who are what we consider average earners for the UK and who are also considering moves either down under or to Canada. Everyone agrees that it would be great to have a second series (which wouldn't be quite so glamorous) for us average pommes! I would say that the majority definately do not live in lovely UK detached 4 bed houses so how about a series for those of us who can afford perhaps ?90 - ?130k on a house down under? Thanks for the consideration and yes we would love to be willing guinea pigs for the next series - any where near the coast in Aus. Colin

  25. I really enjoyed watching A Place in the Sun. I found the show to be very informative for anyone really considering a move. It gives you a fantastic insight into the lifestyle and what really is affordable/ reachable in Australia/NZ. The home choices in each area where very realistic and well chosen to meet the families needs. Local transport amenities where well mapped out generally a great all rounder and it certainly made us consider relocating. Is it possible to send through details on how we could apply to be on the show, We both would be very interested to hear further about this as we are serious about moving there in the next 14-16 months. Look forward to hearing from you..Thank you

  26. Whilst I enjoy these programmes, I think you got a bit carried away recently with Melbourne's weather. It is not that great, example: Malaga in S.Spain was actually warmer recently and it is mid winter there! I think OZ is a cultural void.

  33. Hi... would love to emigrate to Australia , have watched this programme many times and have noticed its always young families that are the only ones that seem to go on this programme. Obviously its because there is an age limit of 45 for men, is there any other avenue we can go?

  34. Hi... I loved watching the programme as my family our considering a move to Australia and I love looking for the tips and the reality scenarios given... one thing that I personally what I think would also add to the reality is having a small section with families that have moved over there (I know there are timescales) but e.g. the family who are looking to make the move maybe spend an afternoon or evening with those that have been fortunate enough to have made it, then you can have a good talk about all that is involved and gives you an idea of what life would be like when you have made the move and made friends, I know there are a number of sites/agents that could be contacted to set this up...

  35. I've always enjoyed this programme but now I see they've succumbed to the ridiculous obsession for panning and zooming every other shot, making viewers suffer motion-sickness! What is the point? It does nothing to enhance enjoyment of the programme.

  39. Myself, my partner and daughter are about to be granted visa's to live in South Australia (Adelaide) in the next 18 months. We have not a clue of where to live or what's a good price. We are keen to be near good schools, a great community and of course, near a beach. My partner will be most likely working in the city as he's a development consultant. Any tips ideas, or even to be on the show would be great. Save us a lot of time as we are just sooo busy!
