Oxbridge-based couple Mick and Linda have worked hard all their lives and with early retirement on the horizon they want a complete change of scenery in which to enjoy their life savings. But there’s a big difference.

Ex-RAF man Mick’s life has been a whirlwind of foreign jaunts and glamorous locations and he’s gotten rather used to it. So now, hitting retirement, his itchy feet are ready for another adventure. He’s determined to start a new life in Cape Verde, the semi-tropical volcanic islands off the African coast. Wife Linda agrees – almost. At 45 she is about to take early retirement too – but all her plans concern Wales. She feels a move west to Snowdonia will offer fantastic scenery while still being close to their grown up children, Emma, Lucy and William.

With such different locations on the cards, the key word is compromise for Jonnie and Jasmine as they work hard to find the perfect retreat.

The task for Jonnie and Jasmine
Rural settings with views and plenty of outdoor space are top of the wish lists for Mick and Linda. Jonnie gets £250,000 for his search in Wales, while Jasmine is allocated £200,000 for the Cape Verde Islands.

Ok. you've got me interested in CV alright! I reckon that there is better potential for setting up small businesses there than a lot of other places in Europe right now. How do I get in touch with their Gov. Dept. of Trade re the import tax situation that I hear is high. That wouldn't do any new business much good. They can't make everything in-house?! I can think of a dozen new businesses right now that would do well in a developing republic. How trustworthy are their bankers? It is said that the Portuguese founded/laid claim to the islands, and so they speak mainly Portuguese, but their 2nd language must be African. Do they teach English in the schools? What currency do they primarily use?

Mick does not know what he is talking about. Yes he did buy from the developer and yes it is still off-plan waiting to be built. Beryl, Nuneaton.

I doubt this previous comment, is the man from the programmme, as the developer in question seems to be suggesting that the couple DID buy from them, as I am in communication with this developer

We didn't buy anything in Cape Verde. I came home and crunched some numbers, worked out how it was the property developer of the other houses could make money and if there really was an investment opportunity. Watched the value of the pound begin to drop like a stone and decided the risk was too high and there was no real investment opportunity. And events have proved my decision well founded and correct. So we are actually going to move to France and came close to buying once or twice but now are waiting for savings interest rates to go back up and hopefully the pound to get stronger before we buy anything. The programme was filmed May 2007 Wales and June 2007 Cape Verde. I doubt any of the properties are still available. BTW I retired from the RAF in 1983!

I was very interested in the "Film Stars" house shown on the the program Good Friday night. My wife is an avid interior designer and she missed the program. Can you tell me if there is a repeat planned or where I could find a 360 movie clip or plans of the house. I have tried the link to the vendor website but it does not show the house. Regards Ruairi

Yes a bit of a post script to tell us what happened subsequently would be a great addition to the program. Sort of leaves us wondering especially with the Cedit Crunch intervening in the meantime!

I wonder if the couple did go ahead with their major investment in Cape Verde (they were going to buy three properties) and if it worked out for them? I note filming took place in 2007 before the economic problems.

On Friday's (10 April) programme, the presenter in Cape Verde pointed out a "mango tree" in the garden of one of the houses, but the tree show was NOT a mango tree, but a papaya tree.
