It's amazing how wasteful household appliances can be, but with a bit of good design and technology, and a few handy tips, you can save a lot more than you think...
According to the Energy Saving Trust, British washing machines, tumble dryers and dishwashers consume £800 million of electricity a year, creating five million tonnes of carbon dioxide. Not all appliances are inefficient, and these simple guidelines will help reduce the waste too...
- Next time you make a cuppa, make sure you only boil as much water as you need.
- Defrost fridges and freezers regularly, as this will help them run more efficiently.
- Don't leave the fridge door open for longer than is absolutely necessary.
- Fill the dishwasher and washing machine right up before sticking them on - or use a half-load setting.
- Use the lowest temperature cycle available - you only need hotter ones for really dirty dishes/laundry.
- Save the tumble dryer for wet weekends - a good blow about in the sun makes laundry smell lovely.
