How To Make An Envelope Cushion Cover

sewing-fabrics

If you'd like to know how to make the fabulously simple red envelope cushion, follow the instructions below - they're so easy, even those of you not experienced in sewing will be able to make one in no time. By Kirstie Allsopp

  • Fabric (see below for instructions on working out how much your cushion will need)
  • Matching thread
  • Pins and needles
  • Button
  • Sewing machine (optional)

Skill

If you've some experience of sewing, this is incredibly simple. However, for beginners, it's still not too challenging, because it's all about straight lines.

Budget

You don't need a sewing machine to do this, but you'll get a better result if you do. Check our buyer's guide for recommendations and prices. The fabric I used was an offcut, but you could buy similar for around £10 per metre.

Time

It took me around half an hour to make mine, but allow an hour if you're a first-timer.

Prepare The Fabric

Step One: Prepare The Fabric

Measure out the fabric. It should be three times the length of the cushion, by the width of the cushion plus add an extra 5cm on all sides for hemming. Then cut the fabric.

Create The Hems

Step Two: Create The Hems

With the right side of the fabric facing the table, turn up 2.5cm at each width end of the fabric to create a hem at either end. Iron, and machine these with a straight running stitch.

Place The Cushion Pad

Step Three: Place The Cushion Pad

With the wrong side of the material facing the table, place the cushion pad at one of the width ends of the material (which you have hemmed). Fold the fabric over the cushion and then fold again. This creates your ‘envelope’.

Mark The Material

Step Four: Mark The Material

Mark the material with a pencil, where the fabric meets. Then remove the cushion and fold the fabric back to this pencil mark.

Finish Sewing

Step Five: Finish Sewing

Pin along the sides, leaving a seam allowance of 2.5cm on each side. Tack, and machine down each side.

Finishing Touches

Step Six: Finishing Touches

Neaten the edges by trimming to 1.5cm, then machine the edges with a zig zag stitch, or overlock stitch (to stop from fraying). Turn the fabric right side out and iron. Stuff with your cushion pad.
