Can't find fabric you want in the shops? Then be creative and create your own! By Jacqueline Davies of www.jacquelinedaviesart.com
As long as you're prepared to experiment, you can do this if you're a beginner.
Funky foam about 80p a sheet; scrap wood, free if you have some at home already, otherwise, just £2 or so from a local wood yard.
Step One: Cut The Wood
Cut your wood to size and sand the rough edges.
Step Two: Prepare The Paper
Measure up a piece of paper a few millimetres smaller than your wooden block.
Step Three: Draw Your Design
Draw out your design on the paper in pencil, remembering to keep it simple. Go over your design in pen and cut it out.
Step Four: Design On The Foam
Using the paper as a template, draw around your paper shape onto your foam.
Step Five: Trim The Foam Design
Trim out your design on the foam sheet and try it for size against the block.
Step Six: Stick The Foam To The Block
Key your wood with a knife or sand paper for a stronger hold. Then put glue from a hot glue gun or contact adhesive onto the foam, right up to the edges. Stick your foam shape onto your wooden block. Once it is on, turn your block over and add pressure for a stronger hold. Remember you will get a reverse image when printing, so any letters or numbers must be glued down in reverse.
Step Seven: Varnish The Block
Varnish your block back and front. Varnish right up to the foam to make the wood water tight. Leave to dry overnight.
Step Eight: Use The Block To Print
Your block is now ready for printing. Use fabric paint (following the manufacturer's instructions) to decorate cushions, curtains, laundry bags, or try using your block on walls with emulsion.
Step Nine: Find A Canvas
Here the print block has been used on a canvas frame. You can buy ready-prepared canvases from art supply shops.
