How To Make A Popcorn Garland

The kids will love making these - they're super quick to do, cost next to nothing to make and can be eaten afterwards. You will need to supervise little ones with the needle, but the results are always great!

  • A 200g bag of popcorn (costs around £1.30)
  • A 100g bag of dried cranberries (costs around £1.80)
  • Yarn or strong cotton (doubled up)
  • Darning needle. This should be enough to create at least three 1m garlands.

Skill

Assuming they're okay with using needles, even kids can make a good job of this.

Budget

A 1m long garland will cost about £1 to make.

Time

On your own: about 10 minutes per garland. With kids: double that!

Step One: Prepare the Materials

Gather your garland ingredients into separate bowls to make the job as quick as possible. Thread a large darning needle with a piece of thick yarn (or doubled up cotton) at least 1m long, tied at the bottom end into a large knot.

Step Two: Thread the Berries and Popcorn

Thread the first piece of popcorn onto the yarn, pushing it gently down onto the knot. Thread three, four or five pieces of popcorn per cranberry, pushing each piece gently to the bottom of the string.

Step Three: Close the Garland

Once you're happy with the garland's length, knot it at the top end, cutting the yarn neatly at either end to create a tidy finish.

Step Four: Drape It On the Tree

Drape your popcorn garland on the tree! If you've got a dog (or toddlers), put it high enough so it won't get eaten or chewed on before the big day.
