Oven bake clay (eg Fimo or Sculpey)
Letter stamps
Acrylic paint
A large ceramic tile
Small (ish) biscuit cutters in various shapes (eg star, heart, tree)
A rolling pin
Knitting needle
Paintbrush
Rag, wire brush or scouring sponge
String
No skill necessary apart from a steady hand. And be careful when they come out of the oven - they will be hot!
You should be able to get a 'starter pack' of 10 assorted 25g blocks of clay for about £10.
You'll need time to bake your creations and then let them cool, and to paint them and let them dry, so you may want to spread this project over a weekend.
Step One: Soften The Clay
Break off a piece of clay and soften it with your fingers.
Step Two: Roll The Clay
Roll the clay out evenly on your ceramic tile, to about a quarter inch thick.
Step Three: Create Shapes
Using biscuit cutters, cut out shapes for your gift tags.
Step Four: Stamp
Using your letter stamp, gently stamp out your chosen word, name or message on each piece of clay.
Step Five: Make A Threading Hole
Using your knitting needle make a hole in each piece of clay to thread your gift tag with.
Step Six: Turn On The Oven
Preheat your oven to the recommended temperature advised on your oven bake clay.
Step Seven: Bake The Tags
With your tags still on the ceramic tile, put the clay pieces in the oven and bake for the advised time
Step Eight: Allow To Cool
Remove the clay pieces from the oven and allow them to cool.
Step Nine: Paint
When cool, paint each piece of clay with acrylic paint and allow to dry
Step 10: Rub Back
Rub the paint off with your wire brush, rag, or sponge, slightly dampened so that the bulk of the paint comes off, leaving paint in your printed letters and an antique paint effect on your tag.
Step 11: Thread The Tags
Thread your string through the hole to create a gift tag or ornament for your tree.
