How To Make A Needle Felted Shrug

A felted jumper or cardigan

A ball of chunky wool

Clover needle felting tool and mat

Tailor's chalk

Scissors

Skill

Perfect for the most basic of crafters. No specialist skills necessary.

Budget

If you use an old jumper and your rag bag then all you'll need to buy is some tailor's chalk and a needle felting tool with mat, which should come to a total of £10-15.

Time

It depends on the complexity of your project, but even quite detailed patterns can be achieved in an afternoon.

Step One: Lay Out & Cut

Lay out your jumper and cut it down the centre of the front (you can either do this by eye or measure it and mark it first with the chalk).

Step Two: Cut To Shape

Using a plate or some kind of circular template, round off the corners with the tailor's chalk and cut to shape. You can also shorten the sleeves and take off some of the length at this stage, depending on the style you want. Don’t worry about the fabric fraying as felt doesn't fray!

Step Three: Begin Needlefelting

Needlefelt the cut edges by looping your wool and needle felting it into position, one loop at a time, until the jumper is complete. Alternatively if you do not have any Clover tools you could use a simple running stitch as decoration.

Step Four: Decorate

Add a lovely vintage style brooch and your shrug is ready to wear!
